Show Overpriced textbooks a burden for students Ani Arakelian Opinion Editor Students have a lot loton loton loton on their school plates work and social life As all students know college can cost a lot Even with grants or and/or loans many students still have to work full- full fullor or time part-time jobs to bear the burden of tuition rent and textbooks The price of textbooks has been going up non non- stop New editions come out every couple of years It is expensive for a student to go to college without having to buy all new brand-new textbooks Textbooks can cost a student anywhere from to per semester One way for students to recover some of that money is to sell their textbooks at the end of the semester If they sell their textbooks back to the school they never know how much they're going to get back If the school needs the textbook then they're going to get a higher price If they have havea a textbook that the school has numerous copies of or the textbook has been replaced they're going to get very little if anything for it Even if students sell all their textbooks back to the school each semester they're not going have enough to buy the next semesters semester's books even used The school charges more for the used textbooks then they paid the student for them The school is making money from textbooks each time they are sold It would be understandable if it were only a couple dollars for repackaging and cost of selling the book but it itis itis itis is more For instance a Math 1050 textbook brand new is plus tax When the school buys the textbook back they pay students up to 50 percent of the original cost When the school sells that used textbook to another student they charge That is 22 percent of the original price or in inthis inthis inthis this case Shouldn't the school try to help students They have already made money off the book the first time they sold it With new editions of textbooks coming out every couple of years a whole new group of students will have to buy new textbooks from them The school should be selling used textbook as a service to its students not to make money off of them If the school is going pay us half for our used textbooks then they should only charge us half plus the cost of holding the textbook which shouldn't be that much because of the hundreds of textbooks that come through Some students try to sell their books on their own If they sell their books on their own the most they can hope for is a little littlemore littlemore littlemore more than half While that thatis is more than the school will pay them they still have to do all the work in finding someone to buy their book The school already has the resources to sell used textbooks They just need to stop overcharging students |
