Show Highlights of tomorrow Jonathan Long Opinion Editor In present day the air we enjoy breathing is yet un Corporations have yet to find a way to bottle it up and sell it back to us for a profit That also means that it is unprotected and could eventually beup be beup beup up for grabs Who says we should all just share a common commodity Isn't it unpatriotic not to make a buck off of anything that can conceivably be sold to the public in fact that is isa isa a down right communist attitude We Ve should start bottling it immediately We can stock it next to the water If we have cans of instant fresh air it really wont won't matter any anymore anymore anymore more what we do to the atmosphere right Well as long as youre you're not concerned about changing weather patters increasing tornado and hurricanes rising ocean levels as moreice more moreice moreice ice melts from the poles thousands of forest fires raging uncontrolled year after year from severe heat waves billions of people being evacuated from coastlines and flooding into other regions and states as global warming refuges then we should bottle us up some air Oh yeah the downside is skiing will really suck I I j I remember as a kid growing up in Logan Utah in the late the wonder I felt and the awe that I was struck with asI asI as asI I would barrel into five- five foot snow banks on the neighborhood lawns I 1 remember feeling kind of small and afraid I would get lost because I couldn't even see over them If you dont don't believe me ask your parents how it once was wasand wasand wasand and why Utah used to have havethe havethe havethe the greatest snow on earth Today the world is different jn in many ways how it has changed is a matter of opinion and the featured argument of many debates from high- high ranking officials to random bar room conversations Unfortunately there are scientists on both sides of the argument of global climate change This slows down the process of change to a snail crawl cra If you owned and operated a multi-billion multi dollar corporation whose word would you take The scientist that tells you your business practices are killing the planet and everyone every everyone everyone one on it or the scientist you can pay to say this a natural part of Earths Earth's cycle and arid humans have no effect on the environment Unfortunately for those corporate sponsored scientists the evidence of ill effect is getting harder to ignore and write off as conspiracy theories and hypothetical research As heat waves spike higher and higher each summer and as the icecaps icecaps ice icecaps caps on both ends of the Earth keep melting at an unprecedented rate the evidence would seem to be overwhelmingly in favor of a changing the way we live on this planet News outlets are reporting record number of travelers this summer even with the gas price spike Car companies are reporting continuing sales of their and trucks Fourteen new coal burning energy plants are slated for construction before our environmentally friendly president leave office in 2009 One of those plants is proposed to pop up right here in central Utah A new coal plant is in inthe inthe inthe the blueprint process for Sevier County This new plant would add tons of pollution into the atmosphere with a mix of sulfur dioxide particulate matter and carbon dioxide according to Utah's Department of Air Quality Not to mention the states state's plan to expand three existing coal power plants adding another tons of pollution a year One would think in inthe inthe inthe the land of Zion the so- so called Promised Land the protection of the state would be more important and more would be done to guard this natural treasure Outside of the religion- religion dominated politics politic a one one- sided dominant opinion in inthe inthe inthe the Republican Party and the low alcohol content in beer Utah is a great place to live Which is why it isone is isone isone one of the fastest growing states state's in the union So how are the politicians politician's and corporations that operate in our fair state allowed to abuse it so much Why are the urban sprawls getting pushed farther apart Why is the UTA proposing plans to cut bus routes Where are the new lines at that we voted for last November They arent aren't waiting to start that massive mile Legacy Highway stretching from Brigham City to Nephi which will cut right through the wild wildlife life reserve at the Great Salt Lake Currently political action portrays quite the opposite stance from trying to save the natural beauty of the state and our air So instead of investing in cleaner sources of energy OP producing reliable and more accessible public transportation our state leaders have opted in continuing with their old methods of doing things relying on fossil fuels to power our state and they are getting away with it with out even havening to try hard Vell Well science is pretty progressive I bet they can invent a pill that will work as sun block so we dont don't get cancer and the can of profitable air sold at convenience stores cant can't be that far away They already sell us water So if it doesn't really effect us right now and if your not going to do a anything about it why should I |
