Show 23 3 days 01 of paris less bliss Jonathan Long Opinion Editor Well one thing was made clear last week The rich richare richare richare are the elite and are not to tobe tobe tobe be held accountable to the same standards of law as the rest of the American society is inextricably fixed to If any of you so much muchas as happened to glance at ata ata ata a television last Thursday you couldn't help but notice the abundant media coverage of Paris Hiltons Hilton's premature release from her day 23 sentence of incarceration This was reduced from the original sentence of 45 days imposed as a consequence of violating her probation from a DUI For once it seems the media has finally found a justifiable reason to cover the celebrity news For once this story of a celebrity has a profound affect on the reality of our country No one can truly accuse or praise the United States of a fair and balanced soc society ety In fact no such system currently exists or has ever existed with any historical proof This is a fact we seem to live with The world is an unjust place and there is not much we can do about it Usually the thin film of tint that blankets 1 J the divisions between social classes and race is unacknowledged by the large so that we can allkind all allkind allkind kind of get along with our lives Yet this little episode has some how seemed to rip that film apart and awaken once again the realization of division even further It has reminded this country once again though there are those that need no reminder just how different the law treats people due to their status As if the treatment received by the impoverished victims victim's of Hurricane Katrina weren't enough Well as the drama has unfolded over the past few days since I began this article little miss Paris Hilton has been released from jail and ironically roughly 24 hours later she found herself handcuffed in the back of a police car on a ip to the slammer Now maybe this is not as funny to everyone else but the shots of her sobbing and calling out for her mommy was pure comedy It is hard to sympathize for someone who has never had to live in reality shows disregard for those that do not live in her privileged status and makes no effort to positively affect society It also helped to restore some of the lost or misplaced faith I have in our system On her initial release citizens from across the country rose up in protest sending thousands upon thousands of mails e-mails into the Los Angles County Sheriffs Sheriff's Department written in outrage outrage outrage-of of Hiltons Hilton's supposed related medical-related release Most of the mails e-mails called for the sheriffs sheriff's resignation some blatantly accused the department of accepting bribes for Hiltons Hilton's release Now as far as I know you dont don't get released from froin jail without some serious medical health problems and even then as soon as youre you're better they take you back to jail to finish out your sentence She is back in jail and we are left to ponder the reality of our situation Was Vas her return to jail based on the number of citizens' citizens complaints or was justice just momentarily delayed and now being served It is obvious we live in a broken system but hope has always sprung that people are working to tomake make it better After this fiasco can any of us truly believe it it I Ii i |
