W i Bateman j Music Reporter I 1 is the hardest hardest I acts in hip Tra Traveling ling lingI I across the country j I numerous times from their Northeastern homes I I II the three three- three member ember group I I of Ij consisting emcee j I j deejay and beat master masterMaker Maker has made stops in inI j I Salt Lake City three times The band is currently I i touring under the banner of 3 the Hard Way their first firstI I II headlining tour featuring 29 I shows in 33 days including II I the April 8 show at Monks Monk's I House of Jazz This tour represents our love for the culture our ourI I music comes from and the soul we try to give to people I from the studio to the stage I Weve We've made the conscious decision to go out this time I by ourselves and share the stage with local openers because we are standing on our own fe feet t the band states on its its Web site When it comes down to it we know that our supporters will come cone through and make this tour a success without needing to go out with a named bigger-named group to ensure the place will viII be packed We have faith that in every city people will remember the shows weve we've shared and will show love for us again Flyers and Web sites listed 9 pm p.m. as the starting time so my girlfriend and I arrived at that hour but when we entered we were the only people inside I began to wonder if we would be the only ones to show up it was Easter Sunday after all No matter we took advantage of the free pool and cocktails as people started trickling in Around 1030 pm p.m. local opener took the stage With his back to a graffiti banner proclaiming and his DJ began spitting rhymes and dropping beats There is a time when the opener brings too much energy and seem seemed cd to tobe tobe tobe be caught in this bind At times it seem seemed d like he was yelling his lyrics his face was glowing red During the 6 5 song sets talent was overshadowed by the impressive beats and scratch scratches s coming from his DJ whose name I unfortunately cant can't recall Did I mention it was cocktails Up next was another local rapper called Adverse Adverse took the stage wearing a suit jacket and sunglasses reminiscent of the television show Chips His hair was and bore a resemblance to Ashton Kutcher To make matters worse a man dressed in a bunny suit and armed with witha a small megaphone shared the stage I couldn't help but think that the whole audience was about to be maybe that's how he got the name Adverse As cliche as it sounds one thing rang true true and it was as to n t judge t leu aj book by its cover Adverse backed by the stunning beats from DJ c Crisp brought the crowd to its feet Transforming Monks Monk's into a house party a la Kid- Kid Play n-Play Adverse brought party hop hip-hop back Finally it was time for Glue to take the stage Words can not express how good they are When I first saw them on the Scribble Jam tour took the stage and declared that this would be one of the best shows youve you've ever seen As filled ego-filled as his statement sounded he wasn't that far off Throughout the night Glue performed songs off its latest Catch as Catch Can Sunset Lodge and Seconds Away The highlight of the night came when dedicated Early Morning Silence to a anyone j e ro o had lost ost someone someone or or something then brought the crowd along for a freestyle about impeaching the president Although Monks Monk's had a decent crowd its it's a good guess Glue would be happy performing in front of five people Despite being thousands of miles from r. r Z l n X r m Gent tri Y t i Ii M S s 1 t It t JJ i z 4 Y- Y t a-t i j. j p rW 1 s tt m J N ug Z f U I w ww iJ X fo i J rW w Ys s e ac-e C 4 o f l. l Jl r futi 1 le git 1 7 J home the band has so much J energy and an obvious love for performing that seeing liv liven a must must- see Unfortunately if jf you missed the show at Monks Monk's chances are it will be at a much bigger venue next time These kids have so much talent and energy that it wont won't be long before the rest of the country catches on r I r Ir |
