Show Predictable plot twists Piccadilly in Stacie Peart Arts Editor Another Mormon movie has reached the big screen Instead of tackling the violence and chaos of Church Ball or the hilarity in attending the local Singles Ward the latest film decided to take on the water out story Piccadilly Cowboy follows Montana cowboy Carson Wells as he works at a beef company in London England As AsCarson AsCarson AsCarson Carson works and lives near Piccadilly Circus he is also unk unknowingly courting the boss's granddaughter The plot could have easily worked as a low-budget low film production because there was no need for expensive special effects After watching Piccadilly Cowboy its it's evident that the filmmakers would have benefited from some extra classes at film school before they started production Piccadilly Cowboy is a waste of time and j J money The script acting cinematography and soundtrack turn this supposed romantic comedy into a disappointing and ridiculous look at a relationship in what is supposed to be one of the worlds world's most exciting cities The first wrong turn producers made was not immediately tossing the script into the trash or at least asking for a re are If the producers had read the script they would have noticed the cheesy dialogue and the predictable plot twists Piccadilly Cowboy is based somewhat on Taming of the Shrew or 10 Things I Hate About You for those who barely remember the Cliffs Notes version of the Shakespeare classic Updating Shakespeare could have worked just look at Amanda Bynes' Bynes 2006 film the Man That film scored an okay amount of dollars at the box office but L raked in the dough when it was released on DVD Even the Utah version of Pride and Prejudice was tolerable and contained interesting characters loosely based on those from Jane Austen's book Unfortunately the Piccadilly Cowboy writers couldn't make interesting the simple story of Carsons Carson's attempt to marry his girlfriend Lucy which depends on him first finding a suitor for her plain older sister Gemma The storyline doesn't completely stick with the Shakespeare classic but filmgoers will see the added plot twists coming from a amile amile amile mile away A handful of actors star starin starin starin in the film and the lead characters dont don't impress as much as the supporting characters Petrie as asCarson asCarson asCarson Carson should have worked more on delivering his lines than waxing his eyebrows The Canadian actor had the wrong look to be cast as a Montana cowboy and his accent was more annoying than endearing The two female leads Sophie Shaw and Kate Foster-Barnes Foster are tolerable to watch but they seem as uninterested in what's happening in the film as the audience One actor that seems like he hes he's s actually trying to portray his character is Tom Toni Butcher as Nigel Carsons Carson's boss and possible love interest for Gemma Gemma and Lucys Lucy's grandfather played by James Greene beef company receptionist Alice Gwyneth Powell and a jailbird Dermot Keaney that Carson comes into contact with because of ofa a misunderstanding all decided to stretch their acting legs and actually um urn act They couldn't completely save the film but they should at least get getan getan getan an A for effort The two most noticeable flaws in the film are the script and the acting but for avid film connoisseurs the cinematography and soundtrack are arc equally obnoxious Shots intended to establish the characters' characters locations ended up looking like random shots of plants and doors thrown in to get the film to its agonizing minutes while straight-on straight up close-up shots of actors in dialogue made the dialogue choppy Instead the camera operators should have pulled out for wider establishing shots and set setup setup setup up both the actors in the shot to show that they were in fact interacting Film scores shouldn't be noticeable as they are just there to heighten the drama action or comedy on screen This score stuck out like a sore thumb The music in inthe inthe inthe the film didn't fit the scenes and seemed like cheesy minute last-minute add An example is the montage where the star- star crossed lovers have to decide what they want after Lucy dumps Carson to go on a church mission Instead of some sappy Ive I've- just-been-dumped just song the filmmakers inserted the even sappier I Honestly Love You by an unknown n singer no I less ss First of of all that song should never be used in any film that isn't a spoof unless the filmmakers want hysterical fits of laughter from the audience and second Piccadilly Cowboy filmmakers couldn't even afford the barely better Olivia Newton-John Newton version Sitting through a terrible film like Piccadilly Cowboy was bad but at least I can warn everyone else to stay away and save their hard-earned hard cash Instead movie Mormon-movie fans should check out Mobsters and Mormons or even better Brigham City if they're looking to support filmmakers and films Whatever you do save your money and almost two hours of your life by steering clear of Piccadilly Cowboy |
