Show Text messaging etiquette I Jeffrey Wall Contributing Writer It seems that text messaging has gained a firm finn grip upon our society and its popularity can be seen all over campus and in its classrooms Students are using text text messaging as much if not more than the voice calling option on their cell phones is so popular that it has become a serious distraction in the classroom just like the hand written notes of the old school I I think thin text messaging is isa isa isa a very handy thing to have I 1 use it about 50 percent of the time said Matt Burbank In class I 1 think its it's for the most part disrespectful There arc are countless stories of students attending lectures with someone who spends the entire time sending and receiving text messages Each story comes to the same conclusion students are having difficulties finding a place for in the classroom I have a hard time with people that text in class just because it distracts me and the teacher I just dont don't like it personally said Lindsey Tilley Students arent aren't the only ones feeling the effects of this technology Professors are starting to include text messaging restrictions in their class syllabi and arc are giving repeated verbal reminders during class Obviously as is an 11 instructor I 1 dont don't want people doing other things besides besides' paying attention to what is going on in class said Terry Stokes a professor of Economics and Finance Text messaging is completely taking their focus away from what's going on in class Its It's not for their good and certainly not for the class's good Its It's something that doesn't have havea a place in the classroom Students and Faculty agree that cell phone should just be turned off during class in order to avoid any temptation They also understand that there times when people need to be available to the outside world while attending class and text messaging is a great way to stay connected If you are expecting som something thing important let the teacher know and then step out of the class to take care of it said Burbank New technologies like text messaging go through growing pains when they are first introduced to the public The diverse us uses uses s of text messaging obviously have a place in the wireless world and are arc here to tei s1 stay We are all used sed t technology and we it because it is available but we haven't haven t fully dev developed l p pa a sense of etiquette etiquette it sometimes comes later said Stephen I Ruffus s English dep department r tit chairman The Utah House of Representatives is currently considering a bill that prohibits cell phone use use while driving for individuals under the age 18 Some of the Representatives where slow to support this bill fearing future restrictions aimed at adults Students should expect this proposed bill to spawn spa further legislation aime aimed t it t limiting the cell phone of all citizens There has t So Sobe be a solution that will lii limit the need for law makers maker's to step in and take s such actions Everyone interviewed v d for this article agrees that students are arc ad adults and should be allowed to govern themselves leaving no need for officials to establish restrictions limiting cell phone use use on campus |
