Show Clowns Clowns' CI owns is IS an r American classic S uz Leslie Conder L Local c 1 Arts Reporter No this play is not about a 1000 Clowns That knowledge in itself relieved my sister when I asked herto her herto herto to accompany me to the opening night show What this show is about is having havinga a good time audience members included A Thousand Clowns was written in 1962 by Herb Gardner which could have proved problem problematic tic in inthe inthe inthe the ostentatious department if not for the great direction of John Caywood and the incredible cast We have laughed quite a alot alot alot lot in the rehearsal process enjoying the play and each other Its It's called a play and it should be just that to some degree Caywood said Morgan Lund plays incorrigible Murray Bums Burns The loving bachelor uncle who has been taking care of his nephew Nick Burns Bums since Nicks Nick's mom l left ft him at ather ather ather her brothers house six years earlier A bachelor who tries to act as if Nick would be bethe bethe bethe the only person hurt if the social workers worker's took him away Lunds Lund's breakdown on onstage onstage onstage stage to Sandra Markowitz played by Amy Caudill when he realizes that Nick is going to be taken away was the turning point in how you felt about this adult child The love that Murray has for Nick is broken down in his breakdown Lund broke my heart as he charmed Sandras It was the best scene of the show Nick Bums Burns played by young David Chardack blew the audience away with his comedic straight- straight man timing and the way he tapped into his knowing all-knowing role Nick is the nephew of Murray who is too smart for his own good Nick makes up for his uncles uncle's immaturity by becoming the adult in the relationship Nicks Nick's breakdown when he sees sees his uncle letting himself get talked down to was very moving It was the best scene of the show Ok I know that I already said that but the play was just so good Gordon Jones played Murrays Murray's older brother Arnold Jones' Jones role as Arnold al though although supporting was very poignant to the play Jones is a special actor who never looks like hes he's acting He is the role and he just makes it look easy It was a joy for all to be in the presence of Jones artistic genius The acting in this play was wasa a sight to behold Another sight to behold was the impressive set was designed Photo courtesy Y of cc cu r j The rai d rY Y r wi F by Marnie Mamie Sears and Spencer Brown along with Maire Mair over props This set and the props used on it were phenomenally fantastic Every little detail for a New York one room bachelors bachelor's pad vas was thought about right down to the girl gin lamp whose breasts light up Before I give all of the credit to the set design team there is another designer who needs his just rew reward rd and that is James Mayo sound designer The timing of the New York streets streets ts sounds was impeccable When the sound and sets are perfect as they were it transforms the audience instantaneously from b being ing ingan an onlooker observing 1 to being a part of the playA play A Thousand Clowns Clowns' Clowns Clowns' is a fun play for all tJ to g gand go and see The cast and cr cre V cre V were hand picked perie perfectly y for each role they pla played d don on or off stage Yo You will ill willbe willbe be remised if you do dp t go and see this fid American classic t f I f j I J 1 |
