been the fan favorite of the first and second Freedom Fest During the production of Ghostly Guardians Fetzer was able to maintain complete control of the project something relatively unheard of in the film industry I was given a large sum of money to do that film Jt was really fortunate Fetzer said about his big break After completing Guardians Fetzer realized that the small documentary film might The Film and Storytelling g r South 4 29 m to r FREE tr page f not survive amongst the thousands of submission at atthe atthe atthe the Sundance or Film Festivals Instead of giving up hope that the project would ever find an audience Fetzer decided to create a different type of film festival in Utah Were trying the appeal to people who want to spend their time very intelligently Fetzer said Interest increased with each Freedom Fest allowing the idea to form into a unique traveling festival showcasing friendly family-friendly art The third semi-annual semi Salt Lake Freedom Film and Storytelling Festival traveled to the University of Utah and has now made its home at from Nov 27 The free events are scheduled all day at South City Campus from 8 am a.m. t to 5 pm p.m. Some of the entertainment on the schedule has been displayed in previous showings at the Freedom Fest But Fetzer hopes that presenting a diverse group of films including classics from the silver screen local documentaries and holiday films will intrigue movie enthusiasts There will also be live storytelling performances for attendees interested in something a little different Fetzer added that they're trying to reach out to a avery avery avery very broad audience with a avery very very broad very subject broad subject matter appealing to all ages One new addition to the Freedom Fest line up for this season is The Music- Music of Mathematics The documentary is a project close to Fetzer's heart with its blend of numbers and notes The film also pulls on Fetzer's background in education as it shows new ways to teach math a subject many students find difficult I wanted to take music and use it to enliven peoples people's interest in mathematics That was one of the main ideas behind it Fetzer said For me math was always t this is wonderful amazing adventure The Music- Music of Mathematics was originally thought thought up up as an anaid anaid anaid aid for math professors until Film of math has a huge hurdle not just college students Along with some new additions to the Freedom Fest Fetzer believes that the high standards for submissions will appeal to conservative audiences The films and acts are meant to set the Freedom Fest apart from other film festivals that have taken up residence in m Utah Some of the short films are amazing Fetzer said Christian The Unfolding is an amazing story of a young girl trying the deal fact that her father has Its It's just a very deep movie Where many independent film festivals have certain criteria for entries Fetzer applies a strict list of standards Not appealing to what Fetzer describes as Hollywood standards is okay by him Films with gratuitous violence and lewdness are not accepted in the Freedom Fest and after entries are screened for these elements the films are looked at artistically Projects that stand out from the rest of the crowd might make it into the rotation of the Freedom Fest and to be view by various film lovers at campuses across the state But Fetzer continues to to look J for ways ways to create unique films using the new technology that allows the average person to todo todo todo do what major film studios create Technology caught up with the dream Fetzer said If you were to try and do this years ago it would have likely been close to impossible Digital technology created an opportunity for a smaller festival to immerge Not having to deal with film filmstrips filmstrips filmstrips strips and film projectors has enabled Fetzer to show h his s collection of classics and contemporary short films in a traveling festival setting Enthusiastically Fetzer took on the challenge of molding a film festival into something different Changing the face of the festival Fetzer continues to create his films showcase clean entertainment and perform appealing songs for students faculty and the public as the Freedom Fest travel to colleges and universities around the state of Utah sf m r jt Free i est
