Show Fo Food d Drive a Huge Success For Local Shelter r r Lisa Young Staff Writer In two weeks time Salt Lake Community Colleges College's students and faculty members members mem mem- bers collected three truckloads truckloads truckloads truck- truck loads of food to donate the South Valley Women's Shelter The shelter said that this was the largest shipment of donations that they had ever received The food drive went from March 22 to April 2 at Redwood Campus The American Chemical Society Phi Theta Kappa and the MESA group all combined their then efforts this spring to sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt and Food Drive for South Valley Women's Shelter The support from the teachers stu students and club members has been enal said Rochelle Mills Vice President of Community Service for American Chemical Society South Valley Women's Shelter is a safe house that protects victims and gives them a place to stay for 30 days The shelter provides clothing food toiletries shoes up make-up and all of the things that are needed for daily life Toys movies I i Phi Theta Kappa members the variety of food they collected over the two week food drive bOOKS DooKs games and other luxuries luxuries luxuries ries are available but only by those who donate them to the shelter Phi Theta Kappa sponsored the food foo drive the MESA group put together g o items for the Easter Egg Hunt 2 and the American Chemical Society a delivered the theo a o food items and anda f a ran the activities It sounds very cut and dry but many members belong to two or more of these clubs and everybody had to help with each part said Rochelle Mills She also felt that the efforts of combining more than one group was a huge success it built lasting friendships and associations Barbara Roper President of the American Chemical Society ACS proposed the idea for the Food Drive last Fall Semester as an idea for a community service service service ser ser- ser ser- vice project Rochelle Mills Vice President of Community Service for the ACS liked the idea of the Food Drive and decided to incorporate it with the Easter Egg Hunt The members and advisors advisors advisors sors of all three groups were very enthusiastic and supportive with their time money and diligence to tomake tomake tomake make this service project a success said Rochelle Mills Many of the he faculty members members members mem mem- bers that heard about the Food Drive at imme- imme it to their students and offered incentives incentives incentives tives for donations We know that people care about others but out the added incentive that these teachers teacher's offered their students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents gave the needed help reminder said Mills Ben a dental student at solicited several dentists in the Valley and received hundreds hundreds hundreds hun hun- of toothbrushes tubes of toothpaste and floss Chris Jewkes a pre- pre pharmacy student at works for fr Harmons Harmon's and was able to bring a donation donation donation dona dona- tion of to the cause Kristen Wayman gathered personal donations of 80 to help purchase supplies et C 3 VJ CI 0 o o of f a One of the many overflowing overflowing overflowing over over- flowing boxes of collected food for the childrens children's Easter Egg Hunt All donations will go to families at the shelter where th they y will be given the freedom to choose some of the food that they would like to eat |
