Show LETTER TO THE EDITOR 4 I disagree whole-heartedly whole to your statement on the benefits of the upcoming Olympics It Itis Itis Itis is my belief these games will bring nothing but problems for the state of Utah We have a new freeway and the new form fonn of transportation tion It was very nice niceto to have federal funds pay for formost formost formost most of this but in lieu of the recent Homeless week we must realize where this sharp incline in homelessness came from Many of the construction construction tion workers that migrated to Utah to build these systems are now out of work and relying relying relying rely rely- ing heavily on our local funds or and/or taxes to support themselves themselves themselves them them- selves and their families With the proposal of the Olympics Utah was promised an increased amount of business and growth within small local businesses It sounds reasonable to make the assumption that small businesses businesses businesses busi busi- nesses will profit from the games but they are exempt from using any logos or trade trade- marks that pertain directly to the games And by Trademarks that includes 2002 Olympics and Winter Unless of course these small companies are willing to pay millions of dollars dollars dollars dol dol- dol- dol lars to become an official sponsor A fee in which most if not all small businesses in Utah cannot afford The reality is that the companies that profit from this sort event are worldwide sponsors like Coke McDonalds and Chevrolet This small amount of time will indeed increase tourism but what happens to all the hotels and housing that were created specifically for the games when the Olympics are over Not to mention all the jobs that will be lost that were used to support these facilities The benefit of ski- ski snowboarding ing for is also a misconception Park City is expecting a 40 decline in ticket sales not rev rev- If you have been to Park City in the past 3 years J J will notice the you enormous increase in lodging Despite all of their efforts for accommodation X 1 they have a record J amount of booked booke rooms 4 J throughout the ski season r y The idea of z decreased fares is IS in In no way legitimate given that the average pass has risen the A average 6 3 dollars from resort to resort as it has in j jevery every year leading up to the Olympics Student passes is also V something that hasn't changed t because of the Olympics It is not fair to assume that cheap i student passes are a product v o of the games coming to Utah With the addition of j schools closing the added r 1 5 congestion and the moral degradation of our society I Ido Ido do not feel the games will 1 jit have an overall positive effect j vi Utah on I 1 William Lowder GS DEGREE |
