Show Students Learn at Free Lunch Monika McDonald Contributing Writer The society of professional profession profession- al journalist visited BYU on Friday September 2003 Journalist from a variety of local papers along with journalism students from across Utah attended attend attend- ed the Free Lunch Utah News Seminar Several students attended the seminar to learn more about journalism from the professionals The day started with inspiring words from William Singleton vice chairman and CEO of Group Singleton has a combination of daily and non-daily non publications in 13 different states He is also the theA A publisher of the Salt Lake Tribune The other keynote speaker was Jim Wall the publisher publisher publisher pub pub- lisher of the Deseret Morning News Singleton spoke about the important roll that the media has hasin hasin hasin in a democracy and also about the future of newspaper He told journalist that the most important thing in both establishing and maintaining a democracy is freedom freedom freedom free free- dom of the press He said it is fortunate to have this freedom in America Singleton also said that fin in the future newspapers will be beon beon on on several different different- t pl platforms r than just the current print that is now He said the internet plays a large roll in everyday life See SP J Jon on page 8 a r y h y i Y Ye e N Y l rr 4 a aa ay y a a a yF 4 u t Ir i l 4 Photo by Adam i Walden alden Jim Fisher addresses journalism students U of ofU U professor continued from page 5 and will continue to have an influence on newspapers Jim Wall discussed with audience audience audience audi audi- ence how important it is for a journalist to have compassion forthe for forthe forthe the news Wall said the best advice to give journalist is his five Rs The first he gave was the readers He said journalist have to remember that we are writing for the readers The second is the news has to be reliable He said that people come to us every day dayto to get the news and we have has hasto hasto hasto to be reliable to the audience Third on his list of Rs R's is journalist journal journal- have to make themselves reachable News is always happening happening happening hap hap- pening around the world journalist journal journal- can not b be every place at every time It is important that we as journalist are reachable to the public to get extra information but also to get feedback The fourth R is news has to be read read- able This means that articles have to flow and have to have some sort of rhythm to them Finally the news has to be rele rele- vant The news has to mean something to the public If something something something some some- thing is not relevant to a story then it should not be included After the keynote speakers those people attending the seminar seminar seminar semi semi- nar chose four out of twenty-one twenty different lectures to attend Professionals in related fields led each of the lectures The topics included important issues such as ethics page design photography headline writing and many more topics that are beneficial to current current current cur cur- rent and future journalists There was insight gained in these lectures lectures lec lec- lectures tures can not always be found in the classroom Being a journalist myself I found the seminar extremely beneficial beneficial beneficial ben ben- to my current studies There are always certain things that can not be taught in the traditional traditional traditional classroom they are only learned once you are in the field reporting This is not just limited to journalism it is true for every profession What I enjoyed about the seminar is that we were able to listen to these professionals and ask them questions about specific events that we as journalists journalists journalists jour jour- have come across The theme of the free seminar was to give extra knowledge and lend a helping had to local journalist journalist journalist jour jour- here in Utah for free Personally what I learned that day can be applied to my current r classes and writing and also tomy tomy to tomy my future career C f |
