S Anderson Contributing Writer The statement I go to slick is usually followed followed followed fol fol- lowed by the response of Oh the high school after high school Everybody has a good laugh and the conversation con con- However does Salt Lake Community College receive the credit and respect it deserves Some students dont don't feel they do and in turn feel resent resent- ment On more than one occasion within classrooms students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents have made derogatory comments towards others students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents telling them they are too smart for Some students have gone as far ar as to tell these students they dont belong here The same students making the derogatory statements to fellow fellow fellow fel fel- fel- fel low students are the same who complain about being a high school after high school Without making this article into a recruitment brochure you need to evaluate what great opportunities you have here why you have them and why you are using them The first question you need to ask is What kind of education do I want This doesn't take into consideration what career you are looking for but what you want to learn If you simply would like to gain knowledge do yourself a favor and skip paying tuition and buy all the books to read There is a great deal of information you can learn from simply reading The education you may be seeking may not be simple knowledge You might seeking a legitimate education in life which is what a college education is supposed to provide you with This is the simple truth not understood by many students throughout the world We have all had this situation situation situation situa situa- tion present itself in our lives In Inthe Inthe Inthe the middle of a mandatory math class a student finally snaps and asks why they should have to learn the material if they are never going to use it Other members members members mem mem- bers of the class begin to nod their heads and some can even be heard saying Yeah why In a recent US History Class Professor James Kimble started the class by discussing what the next few months could mean to us as Americans Obviously this discussion wasn't in the text or even in the syllabus As the discussion continued some quiet laughter came from the side of the room When asked what was so funny one member of the group said He referring to another class member was just wondering when you were going to get to the lesson Kimble handled the situation amazingly smoothly Every morning you wake up you are living American History especially the very critical time in which we are living In order to fully understand history you need to have knowledge of what happened in the past but how it affects us today A good part of learning is subjective and it requires someone like Kimble who loves their subject matter in order to teach it correctly Much like US History literature literature literature liter liter- is continually changing and being put under new scrutiny As with the history department has a superb ambassador for literature Gary Howard has a very solid foundation in literature and could teach from the text but he Howard garnishes lessons lessons lessons les les- les- les sons with stories varying from first hand experience to stories sounding like they have come from police blotters The anecdotes anecdotes ane dotes you hear in one semester L l from Howard could keep students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents interest in literature for years It isn't just the history and literature departments who are fortunate to have these types of ofte te teachers chers Randal Chase and Patrick Kibbie in the Communication Department and andRich andRich andRich Rich Holder in the Mathematics are just a few individuals at who go far beyond the expectation of a normal sor These individuals arent aren't just giving you help in college but also in life These professors have experience at California California- Berkley Boston University Penn State University of Utah and more These are talented individuals individuals individuals who have a lot to teach stu stu- stu- stu dents Are students having good experiences in their classes If not maybe they should look at themselves Some things you can cando cando cando do to enjoy your time at is isto isto isto to get involved on the campus in some capacity or be involved in inthe inthe inthe the activities There are many opportunities from president of the student body all the way down to messing around on Globe Radio with Pat and Terry Teny Is it possible to have an intelligent conversation at Students and professors across the campuses are proving there is a way There are individuals individuals individuals in every class who can teach you The important lesson is for students to be grateful for it C |
