Show i I Political Bu Bull By Christian Staff Writer President Cundiff I like your attitude I have to admit I was wast t skeptical skeptic l about going to col col- lege Thoughts of just being a number and fears that academic academic academic aca aca- demic life would be less than accommodating abounded as I began the process of registrar r f tion more than a year ago Never mind the fact i that my conservative and somewhat jaded mind was filled with visions of professors sors trying to push their beliefs on me Those fears were quickly quelled once I began attending classes Salt Lake Community College though j. j not perfect has proven to be a great institution of higher lear learning ing that recognizes the tIit needs of its most precious commodity- commodity the student an attitude evident in the leadership leadership leadership leader leader- ship of President Cundiff President Cundiff has been quick to address important tant issues One of these is parking parking parking park park- ing an issue of such significance significance significance cance that this paper committed commit commit- ted a full page to it in each of the first two editions We all know what a challenge it can be to find parking most mornings I quickly noticed the absence of usually vigilant parking enforcement ement at the beginning of the semester and the replacement of otred red curb with new parking spaces The presidents president's realization that parking is a problem and his prompt actions are to be commended com com- mended I. I f His commitment to technology in the classroom demonstrates great vision and courage to take on the challenges challenges challenges chal chal- lenges related to such a significant significant significant transition The idea of giving laptop computers to professors and their teaching aids should prove to be a con con- Increased use of the Internet in and out of the classroom creates more flexibility flexibility flexibility for students- students traditional and traditional non-traditional alike While there are still obvious technical bugs that are yet to be worked out and nothing truly compares with the personal interaction of the classroom the convenience these programs offer compensates compensates compensates sates for the patience I expend as they are perfected Finally President Cundiff s philosophy that the school should adopt the business business business busi busi- ness model and treat the student student stu stu- stu- stu dent ent body as a customer base bases is s one the entire collegiate world would be wise to Jo espouse 1 r W b There are those m to the world of academia would say Business is is' evil Is it not the responsibility of paid professors to extend their knowledge to us We pay hard earned money and sacrifice sacrifice sacrifice fice the precious time it takes to earn money to attend classes class class- es here It is the colleges college's responsibility to ensure that we are enriched intellectually and educated to or above standard standard standard stan stan- dard if we dont don't meet the standard it is their responsibility responsibility responsibility to get us there through whatever remedial means essary Part of this responsibility responsibility responsibility is keeping class sizes small that are taught by qualified qualified qualified fied professionals has done this and will hopefully continue to do so in the future So far so good Mr President your ideals and vision are in line with what's important A respected well organized institution of higher learning I hope that you will continue to keep u us the students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents as your number one Youve You've done us well thus far far and and w we we appreciate it but we will continue to watch with a critical eye and be quick to note our |
