Show ta Gk Ti ar M j M J a aWI I WI r x s C F X 0 o 0 oo 0 o 0 0 0 0 o- o 0 o 0 a n O c. c Y 4 J t 0 Py 0 0 O All AllO t i j- j Having Having Havin trouble trou u ble keeping your mind mm d on track I Learn Learh how to stay ahead in school this year with tips from a professional By David Finch Editor Cheif i and Robyn I Staff Writer t 1 In college there is so much fun funt to be had but there is also so soi t i much work to be done According to Gary Cohen in a 1 lecture given in the Student Events Center August d F Cohen the leading presenter m for Training International visited the Redwood campus on August and gave an entertaining and informative lecture entitled Better Grades in Less Time He has visited other college and university campuses around the nation such as Harvard Cornell and MIT and has even been asked to speak in such far faraway faraway faraway away lands as Singapore Cohen currently spends his time touring the country and has presented his material before executives college students and middle high school students on such topics as improving your mental productivity and getting better grades Collage by David Finch In his lecture Cohen discusses everything from learning to speed read to improving your reading comprehension He uses interactive methods and humor to convey his messages and to help his listeners remember remember remember ber the valuable information he relays In the lecture given at recently Cohen gave a plethora of valuable information on studying and comprehension In one part of his lecture he asked a girl to jump as high as she could and mark the spot with witha a marker on a piece of paper hung on the wall After she had recorded her maximum jumping height he hung two five-dollar five See On Track Page 8 I On Track Continued from pg 1 bills one an inch above her mark P and the other two inches above bove the first bill Cohen asked the girl to jump again and on the first try she jumped higher and grabbed the money In reference to this feat he said When you push yourself you find out the difference between the results you re getting and the results you re capable of Cohen emphasizes the use of speed-reading speed as a tool to help you improve both the amounts of information you are able to absorb and the limit to which you can retain it He says speed- speed reading is known by less than one percent of one percent of the population Cohen suggests you learn leam the technique in three stages First you must learn to read Second you need to hear your voice in your head as you read thus enforcing the concept stating you see the words hear them in your head and then you know them Third and finally you have to get to a point where you can see the words and know them without hearing them in your head 99 percent of people people people peo peo- can only read as fast as the voice in their head According to Cohen He says it is similar to receiving receiving receiving ing a Porsche and only being allowed to drive it as fast as you youcan youcan youcan can run you are wasting the potential you ha have e been given Without remembering what you have read there is little point in reading at all This is why Cohen suggests testing yourself regularly after reading to see how much you can recall He says the timing has to be just right in order to be the most effective In his pamphlet Better Grades in Less Time which was handed handed handed hand hand- ed out during the lecture Cohen states Each time you test yourself yourself yourself your your- self and get it right you strength strength- en your memory and increase the time until you have to review it Taking breaks is another er necessity of studying Cohen says Without time to to rest your mind and relax your body you are shortchanging your study time Five hours of study is only good if it is effectively used time Cohen suggests you break from studying on regular intervals scheduled at the times tunes which work best for you Other techniques such as using word association a system system system tem of finding a memorable word or picture to link with a particular word studying in the early morning 1 or late evening highlighting only key information and taking 1 notes in the margins of your textbooks textbooks textbooks text text- books are also part of his course and lecture Any addition information information information tion on this course or others can be found on the internet at or by contacting Training International W.
