Show Conversion for 1998 Not All That Bad By Dawna Branagan News Editor Semester conversions for will have fully taken place by fall 98 according to a mandate for the State Board of Regents The first semester will start the end of Aug and run through mid- mid Dec for a total of sixteen weeks The next semester will then be the Spring semester This will also be sixteen weeks long As for summer the semester will only be eight weeks long The course credit hours will be bethe bethe bethe the same for summer semester only students will attend more each week For example a two credit hour class during the summer will have a required attendance of four hours a week The credit received will be the same as the regular semester As for now the cost to students will stay the same What tuition students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents pay for a quarters quarter's worth of courses they will pay for a semester worth of courses According to Kathy Reavy assistant assistant assistant assis assis- tant professor of nursing financial aid is already on a semester basis There should be little problem for students with financial aid as the switch takes place Currently the conversion team who is made up of representatives from staff faculty and students is training other the staff and faculty members of to advise students for the transition Faculty is working on recombining recombining recombining ing some courses revising curriculum curriculum curriculum lum and deciding on the rearrangement rearrangement rearrangement rearrange rearrange- ment of goals for courses Courses will be the same but will willbe willbe willbe be formatted differently An example example example exam exam- French I II and III will become Continued on Page 3 Conversion Continued from Page 3 combined into two courses of French I and II The conversion team is working on the new semester catalog They expect is to be available to students t by the end of the summer this year The team is also working on a brochure to help students understand understand understand under under- stand how they will be effected and what to expect from the conversion They will be sending letter and doing advertisement to inform of the change Seniors in high school now who plan on attending can expect i ithe the change to take place half way through their two year program According to Reavy the team is preparing and helping staff and faculty faculty faculty fac fac- to get as ready as possible to help students through the transition Its the unknowing about the change said Reavy Its not all that bad 1 |
