R A I r 1 r y i x 4 h hI a p I I Photos by Chris Fergeson The College and University Fair gives students the opportunity to visiting the different colleges and universities without leaving campus Support Education by Voting YES on Propositions 4 45 5 6 By Dawna Branagan NEws Editor Its It's Election Day 96 many of us are of age to vote and today is the day dayto to do it Besides the many candidates to choose from there are several propositions propositions propositions that need to be decided on by bythe bythe bythe the Propositions 4 5 and 6 Proposition 4 permits the State of Utah to guarantee the bonds of every school district thus saving dollars in interest payments and bond insurance insurance insurance ance costs Proposition 5 allows donations to tobe tobe tobe be made to the permanent State School Fund These donations would become part of the funds fund's principal generating more interest income which could then be used to support the public elementary and secondary schools The main proposition of concern to is Proposition 6 This proposition allows income tax revenues revenues revenues rev rev- which go to to the thet Uniform School Fund to be he used for both bolli public and higher education According to Alumni President Linda Cordova opponents to Proposition 6 have alleged that if money is taken from the K 12 will suffer funding losses This is simply no true according to Cordova Proposition 6 will allow more flexibility flexibility flexibility and greater efficiency in budgeting budgeting budgeting bud bud- for term long-term education issues ISSUes Paula Ernstrom community assistant of the Governors Governor's Office said Governor Mike Leavitt is supporting supporting supporting sup sup- porting Proposition 6 She further said that this decision to adopt the proposition must be made by the peo peo- Gov Leavitt is unable to make the decision to adopt Proposition 6 because of the Utah State Constitution Utah ranks last in the nation per pupil expenditure said Jerald Mikesell Director of Finance for the Utah State Board of Education Its 2000 less than the nation The board is also for Proposition 6 Mikesell also stated that the spending cap that has been set for K- K 12 education has been exceeded in funds available Proposition 6 will open it up to meet the amount of funds available This would also help the u set mind set nd-set that education has its own funds and thus make sales taxes available for use by education All but a few districts are in support of adopting Proposition 6 accordi according i ito I l to Mikesell President Phyllis Sorensen said that the supports Propositions 4 5 and 6 They feel that funds should be available to all education Sorensen said high school students who are taking advanced placement classes will find it beneficial beneficial beneficial benefi benefi- cial to have the between K 12 and higher education |
