Show At Risk Students Have Help By Dallas Roberts Contributing Writer This fall quarter a new Academic Standards Policy begins which could affect up to I 1000 students at Depending on academic performance performance performance mance students could be blocked from registration until they attend an academic 1 success workshop or even suspended from for one ter As the policy states its purpose is isto isto isto to focus on active intervention with students who perform poorly in the classroom and provide the support services necessary to encourage their potential for success It applies to students seeking a Certificate Diploma Associate of Applied Science Associate of Science or Associate of Arts Degree The policy has five categories in which students may be at risk Even before grades are given students may maybe maybe maybe be in the first category Faculty members may advise the Academic Standards Coordinator of poor test performance or lack of attendance The coordinator may then contact the student for consultation After grades are posted if a students student's students student's students student's stu stu- stu- stu dents dent's cumulative falls below 1 17 7 after 12 quarter hours a letter is mailed notifying the students of the concerns and recommending a conference conference con con- ference with an advisor After 24 quarter hours if any students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents receives below a 20 a hold is placed on the stud students records This hold does not allow Continued on Page 2 At Risk Students Academic Standards j Continued from Page 1 registration for subsequent The hold is only removed after the students attends an Academic Success Workshop The fourth category is after 36 quarter hours when a student has a cumulative below 20 Records are held and the student is required to meet with an academic advisor They form and Academic Plan of Action The plan could include changes in conditions under which the student could attend school These reductions of hours regular meetings with advisor of tutoring The final action is suspension for forone forone forone one quarter TI This s will take place when after 90 hours a student has a below 17 Students can only re-enroll re in after being absent from for one quarter or if they can provide evidence to the Academic Standards Committee that they have made a positive change that would affect their future grades About to 1000 students will be affected by this new policy said John Wiemer academic standards I tor The idea is to provide direct intervention We hope students dont don't give up Wiemer said According to Wiemer some students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents might have learning disabilities and not even know it Hopefully we can reach some of those risk at-risk stud students students stu stu- stu- stu d dents h he e sal said d He also said that a lot Jot of students are under the level because they 1 fail to notify the registrars registrar's office they have retaken the class If a student L i takes a class again and receives a better better better bet bet- ter grade Students need to go to registration registration registration reg reg- reg- reg and have the old grade replaced by the new one Wiemer said this is the causing many to be under the level when they are really realy not A test was run this quarter at the college About students received letters but no holds were placed Only a handful attended the Academic Success Workshop Wiemer said The academic success workshop addresses how goals and obstacles can affect academic success Solutions for many of those o obstacles are discussed and some academic services like computer labs study groups tutoring and videotapes are explained J |
