Show i MH a H I Letters to the Editor I Student Believes Sports are a Reflection of our Culture Dear Editor It often amazes me the response that I receive when people ask me what my passion or dream in life is My passion or cause as some people would say is sports When I mention mention mention men men- tion that to people with a straight face the tend to think that I am just joking or that I really dont don't understand understand understand under under- stand the important things in our cul cul- cul- cul ture They tell me that sports arent aren't an important part of culture or life but I beg to differ Sports are a very intricate and vital part of our society During the early the United States was forced into going to war The people of this country rallied behind the war effort by volunteering volunteer volunteer- ing services and by giving up some of the luxuries of life Yet the President President President dent of the United States not to have baseball suspended for forthe forthe forthe the years we would be at war The president understood the importance in our society of having a form of recreation so that people were able to go to the ball parks and release their frustrations They even created a women's league Granted the base base- ball wasn't of the highest quality but it was still something fun that the citizens could go watch to forget about life and the horrible truths of the war It was very vital to our culture culture culture cul cul- cul- cul ture at that time me and still is Sports are a reflection of our culture culture culture cul cul- cul- cul ture in many ways How you say The issue of discrimination against race creed and religion has always been a big issue in our society We always remember the stand that Rosa Parks took against discrimination tion and segregation and the epic affect affect affect af af- af- af that that had on the fight for civil rights Although the stand that she took was very important it was not the first attempt to tear down the walls of segregation in our society Jackie Robinson some years before before before be be- fore the Rosa Park incident was one of the first american african-american players every allowed in the Major Leagues He burst through the wall of segregation segregation segregation segre segre- gation like the first rays of sun into a window at the break of dawn He came from the Negro League where only a American African-American baseball players played and he made a great impact on the game both on and off the field He was a great talent but the abuse he took both mentally and physically laid the path for the revolution revolution revolution revo revo- lution of civil rights Sports being a reflection of society is not just limited to us here in the US U.S. In the World Cup Soccer Championship Champion Champion- ship this past year Columbia among others were favored to win the cham cham- They faced the U US SA A.
