Show T American Tale of Tragedy Performed in Salt Lake By Amanda Nielson Entertainment Editor The Dallas Black Dance Theatres Theatre's production of the tragic story of love and betrayal Porgy and n Bess will willbe be performing on Nov 7 The story originally came from the book Porgy written by DuBose Hayward George Gershwin Gersh in came across the book and loved the story so he went to Hayward and told him he wanted to create and opera based on his book The opera opened to mixed reviews and closed in less than six weeks Gershwin died before Porgy and Bess was recognized as one of the greatest accomplishments of American culture of this century This Two-Act Two dance theatrical production of Porgy and Bess is in honor of Gershwin The music is provided by a recording of Miles Davis Choreographer Hope Clarke said When I was asked to stage sage and choreograph Porgy and Bess I felt it would be quite a challenge to todo todo todo do an dance all-dance version quite different different different differ differ- ent from the other times I have directed the opera to see the dancers use their bodies to tell the story like the singers use their voices was very intriguing And it is a delight working with the great jazz version by Miles Davis Dolph said Miles Davis interpreted by dancers has gotto got gotto gotto to be the coolest expression of the Porgy and Bess The music is of course spectacular and the story contains universal themes This is why the brilliance of Porgy and Bess shines brighter with each successive reinvention whether it is staged or recorded Dick Hyman pianist said Porgy and Bess has been one of the most important works of my musical experience and I am delighted to have the opportunity of getting inside the score and adapting it to the choreography needs of Ann Williams and Hope Clarke Becoming even more familiar with the great Miles Davis recording is the other stimulation reason Ann Williams said This Porgy and Bess production is one of the highlights in the history of Dallas Black Dance Theatre The creative spirits of Hope Clarke and Dick A r a e A M v r 3 y c. c f Y s x s. s n of ss s's J Jr r i v F.
