| Show Pass or r Fail The Salt Lake Comm Community College Senate recently recently recently recent recent- ly added four new members to its it's ranks bringing the number of student student student stu stu- stu- stu dent representatives to 18 The idea behind the increase is that a higher ratio of Senators to regular students should improve representation and hopefully drum up a little more interest in the college government The current ratio is roughly one Senator per 1000 students depending depending depending depend depend- ing on which enrollment numbers you read In comparison the state of Utah has about one Representative per citizens and one US Representative for every Americans They're not done yet either Student leaders hope to increase the Senate to 21 members during winter winter winter win win- ter quarter The bottom line here is that the benefits of this expansion will remain to be seen but the move itself is timely and well moti iJ D While the Senate expansion expansion expansion sion should prove to be a good thing it also reflects one of the most glaring problems at apathy Lack of interest and concern concern concern con con- cern has long been one of the biggest roadblocks for the student government The fact that the Senate has to take out advertisements advertisements advertisements advertise advertise- ments in the Horizon just to get some interested names is fairly alarming Its It's not just the students who need to be more involved either While the Senate does a lot to benefit benefit benefit ben ben- their constituents the entire student government the Senate included has a tendency to be cliquish and make their decisions 7 with no real external input A little littlemore littlemore littlemore more effort on both parts would go goa a long way toward making some real improvements Its It's only been around for a few short months but the new newE newE newE E Center of West Valley City has done well carving a niche for itself in the community Opponents of the venue suggested among other things that an arena built for the 2002 Olympics and dedicated primarily primarily primarily marily for the Utah Grizzlies hockey hockey hockey hock hock- ey team would never do well in the Salt Lake sports scene Fortunately for the financially interested parties the opposite has proved to be true The E Center is a modem modern first-class first facility and the Grizzlies are among the elite teams in their league Attendance has been better than average average- thus far typically higher on weekends and h holidays A nod also to the organizations that have taken advantage of the group event tickets tickets tickets tick tick- ets offered by the E Center for hockey games Its It's nice to see something on the student activity schedule that gets away from the traditional slate of college offer offer- ings |
