Show 7 New Faculty Teaching and Learning Center to Open Scholar To Speak at Center Opening Salt Lake Community Colleges College's Faculty Teaching and Learning Center will open Jan 9 with featured noted educator and scholar L. L Jackson Newell president president president dent of Deep Springs College in California Newell will lead three sessions At a 10 am a.m. academic assembly free to the public he will speak on academic and vocational programs programs programs pro pro- grams identifying the common grounds and overcoming elitist hierarchies within education The gathering will be held in room of the Technology Building on Redwood Campus The afternoon sessions Newell will direct toward faculty and administrators At 2 pm p.m. he will meet with faculty faculty faculty fac fac- and administration in a workshop workshop workshop work work- shop entitled What Kind of Support Stimulates Great Teaching His last interactive session designed specifically to include adjunct and concurrent enrollment faculty will be at 4 pm p.m. He will discuss learning communities communities communities com com- and collaboration within the classroom and the College The Faculty Teaching and Learning Center will host an open house throughout the day At pm p.m. a reception will begin which will feature the unveiling of a metal sculpture created by Associate Welding Professor Dave Westley Newell who is on a year three-year leave from the University of Utah has written and edited six books on higher education He also taught at Clemson and the University of New Hampshire He-has He been a visiting professor at atthe atthe atthe the Northeast London University England University of Victoria Canada and University of Auckland New Zealand He has worked with the Commonwealth of the Bahamas to assist with the creation for their first university and he has assisted with Hungarian universities in re establish their independent ment He has received several teaching teaching teaching teach teach- ing awards including the national Joesph Katz Award for the Advancement of Liberal Learning CASE Professor of the Year for Utah University Professor Distinguished Honors Professor Hatch Prize for Teaching or i Excellence and Students' Students Choice Award |
