Show From the Editor You missed the party you paid for Christa McKinnon Managing Editor HOW OW does a lovely to Snowbird with plenty of paid m meals als and Jacuzzi time sound Well to the average struggling student it probably sounds pretty good But before you get your hopes up cool down you weren't in in- You could only be invited if 1 you are the advisor president president president dent or treasurer of a club on campus or 2 shake enough hands hands' and kiss enough babies tobe tobe to tobe be elected to our Executive Council Of course this retreat did not come free Although each of the 75 participants paid 20 to help in the cost of the venture there was still to be paid Someone had to pick up the rest of the tab and guess who that might be You and me Yep the average student who just paid his her 80 to the student fee fund took care of the rest of the bill But before some people get really irate about this student fee thing lets set the record straight Not all of your 80 hard earned dollars goes to send a small portion 0 of the student body to a mountain resort to learn leadership skills Actually only nine percent or eight dollars dollars dollars dol dol- dol- dol lars is budgeted under the term activities The other 91 percent percent percent per per- cent of your money goes to pay for the bond for the second floor of f the College Center maintenance maintenance maintenance main main- of the College Center insurance insurance in in- policies the athletic program new computers and an intramural fee Regardless of the money another item of question is the location in which the retreat is held Wouldn't it be more sen sen- sible to have this annual retreat here in our own facilities and spend the on activities the whole student body has the option to participate in According According According Accord- Accord ing to Gordon Wilson Director of Student Activities having the retreat here is not an option Wilson said the retreat was planned away from the college to ensure that people cant can't run to work meetings family or home However of the 75 people registered for this retreat six never showed up and only 41 were atthe scheduled activity the second night Where were the theother theother theother other half of the people Probably ly work meetings family or home Nevertheless some students did go and some students did stay Some students actually had hada a good time and some students even said it was beneficial That Thatis is not the point I am arguing If it was beneficial great If they had a good time gr great at But I Idon dont don't t want to work my butt off to pay 80 to student fees and have a portion of that money go goto goto goto to expensive activities that are by invitation only Do you Besides Besides Besides Be Be- sides according to the official agenda there were two scheduled Jacuzzi times a tram ride and scheduled gossip ses ses- ses- ses Is this really Leadership Learning Maybe next next- year next year things willbe willbe will willbe be handled a bit differently and the conference can be held closer to home Maybe more people can attend because they dont don't need to ask for three days off work And maybe just maybe we wont won't spend of student student student stu stu- stu- stu dent fees for an activity that less than one percent of our student body can enjoy |
