Show Director of Turning Point Project leaving to jo pursue law school dream Sylvia Mired Alfred Staff Writer ICTORIA Alarcon is leaving leaving leaving leav- leav V VICTORIA ing her position as Director of Turning Point Displaced Homemaker project to attend the University University University sity of Utah law school July 20 will be her last day Alarcon began her position non ion as Director in September gf of 1989 Si Since ce that time the o program r. r gt Ih h has s changed its i name from the Single Parent Office to the Turning Point Program for Single Parents and Displaced Homemakers The new name seems quite appropriate since the student seeking their services are at a turning point in their lives for one reason or another During the time Alarcon has been in her pO position the program has helped place 66 people in full time positions 50 people in part time positions positions positions and three in temporary positions r h 1 i 1 i 4 Y P Photo oto by Ed ute Lite Victoria Alarcon is leaving to experience a anew new care career move Alarcon attributes much of the programs success to two of the workshops that the project offers One on self es teem and the other on net net- working wo king Both according to Alarcon along with communication communication communication com com- skills are valuable tools for helping people back backon on their feet In April the project held a Brighter Days Ahead Conference Conference Conference Con Con- ference as an introduction to their staff and the program along with its offerings It was open to the community and was very informative Alarcon also added that orientation held every Tuesday Tuesday Tuesday Tues Tues- day in the College Center at 1 pm p.m. The orientation covers the services that are available and helps in filling out any paperwork necessary to get started According to Alarcon they are in the process of setting setting setting set set- ting up another session in the evening v r says Alarcon Alarcon arcon says tha thab she arid and her department have had great support from the college college college col col- col- col lege and is very grateful for all their help She would also like the program to get more visibility so that more people in the community can benefit from these services Alarcon has a Masters Degree Degree Degree De De- De- De gree in Educational Psychiatry and devoted 17 years to Mental Mental Mental Men Men- tal Health and Human Ser Ser- Ser Ser- vices She hopes that this experience will help her in her new career move |
