Sherman Fortune magazine A August gust 28 1989 Despite the rising tide o of f legislation leaders in inthe inthe the plastics industry are generally optimistic and consumers spouting environmentalist platitudes continue to buy products made or packaged with plastics in unprecedented amounts The damage we are doing to our environment environment environment environ environ- ment is becoming a matter of life and breath In our twenty year twenty year effort to combat the continued continued continued con con- pollution of our world we have reached the point where petitions incendiary articles television specials and annual days of recognition are not enough We want establishments establishments establishments es es- es- es to change their policies we the consumer must change ours Perhaps this situation appears too overwhelming overwhelming overwhelming over over- whelming and you feel that one persons person's actions actions actions ac ac- ac- ac will not make a difference Individuals can change their circumstances and thereby their world just as wars are won by individuals individuals individuals in in- fighting together Please stand with us as we fight this battle for Mother Earth Starting Monday May 15 I ask you to join us us in not using the styrofoam cups in the cafeteria Instead bring your own drink container or purchase the recyclable glass bottles bottles bottles bot bot- and aluminum cans A petition has been submitted to the manager of the cafeteria expressing expressing expressing ex ex- pressing our concern over the use of styrofoam cups For the next 30 days let us demonstrate our concern by bringing our own cups If at the end of this day 30 period the cafeteria is still selling drinks in styrofoam cups we ask that you join us us in boycotting these drink products There are reasonable al alternatives alternatives alternatives al- al to styrofoam drinking cups but ut no safe alternatives in their disposal nor methods of regenerating our dying g atmosphere Joanne M.
