Show Two students intoxicated I Amanda Hughes Contributing Writer HT HE Utah Highway Parol intoxicated two T THE 1 students on campus Friday April 29 at the DUI Demonstration and Social Social Social So cial and Legal Ramifications of Driving Under the Influence On Friday morning Cheryl and Steve two students were given 10 to 11 ounces of 80 percent proof vodka That afternoon they were put through a battery of tests to demonstrate their effectiveness The battery of tests included the Horizon Horizon- tal Gauge Test the One Leg Stand Test the Walk and Turn Test and the Test In the Horizontal Gauge Test a police officer holds a apen apen apen pen 12 to 15 inches away from their eyes and moves it across their field of vision The police officer looks for clues such as eyeball jerking head movement and how t L ri t. t L t 4 V t tN N t c well they are watching the moving object Cheryl averaged on the eye test but she had trouble holding her head still Steve appeared sober In the One Leg Stand Test the driver has hasto hasto hasto to stand on one leg with lith the other out in front and with his hands down to his sides Students were to remain balanced for 30 seconds as the police officer watches and the person counts out loud slowly Cheryl did below average on this test She was vas swaying s side to side and trying to keep her balance by waving her arms Steve on the other hand remained stiff as a statue The object of the Walk and Turn Test is to take nine steps from heel to toe touching stop turn around and take nine steps back the other way in the same manner Cheryl did somewhat better on this test and again Steve passed the test with flying colors Cheryl was the first to take the Test She registered with an alcohol blood level of Steves Steve's blood level was The legal alcohol blood level in Utah is 08 In spite of the tests Steve did better than Cheryl He had 11 ounces of vodka while Cheryl Sheryl only had 10 ounces Individuals are subject to arrest even if they have an alcohol blood level below 08 and are driving negligently according to the Utah Highway Patrol The police officer also looks for physical signs of intoxication such as rosy cheeks and the smell of alcohol on the breath Cheryl and Steve both had flushed cheeks The initial sign of drunk driving a police officer looks for is a deviant driving pattern such as weaving in and out of traffic improper improper improper im im- proper lane changing and having no headlights headlights headlights head head- lights turned on when it is dark These clues give the officer probable cause to pull a driver over |
