Show o r.- r. AF sf Honoring Those Who Fought Our Wars f 1 v- v to By Kimbal Ingram c Veterans Veteran's Day will be observed 55 on campus Nov 11 so with the increased military activities in the Middle East and Central I America I l feel its it's important that people understand how Veterans' Veterans Day is j observed a I dont don't mean observed with the 9 usual understanding of parades down Main Street U. U S. S A AH A. and the usual rhetoric from the podium 5 5 decrying the horrors of war and the required call for the end to all wars y- y 7 No I mean this day needs to be observed from and with the heart S When the national anthem is played at the sports event yes my tears F- F start to swell but Im I'm asking more than that Im I'm calling for compassion understanding and empathy for those who 7 participated especially for those r f f who survived Wars will always happen despite the work of those misguided idealists who work so hard for dis dis- armaments Their work is noble worthwhile but simply unrealistic 5 S I A short study of either history or the Bible or both will show that we as a J people must deal with the reality of 5 i wars for long time to come k From the study of history well we'll I vl j 1 1 t t k I Iff ff notice that on an average of twenty to thirty years someone started a major conflict From a study of the Bible well we'll discover wars will be with us increasing in intensity and scale until Armageddon is fought which ismore is ismore ismore more than likely a long time in incoming incoming incoming coming my guess being well after our lifetimes Then the earth will have eternal peace 1 From the historical point of view wars will end when human beings have erased all forms of bias have learned international tolerance and concern themselves with helping those around them instead of them them- selves Sorry idealists but I dont don't see how disarmament is going to bring that around especially unilaterally So war will be with us for a time yet a and d people will be required to fight them There is nothing glorious about war nothing so grand that hundreds will rush to sign up Its It's a disgusting dirty work that in the past men were called and forced into performing from the soldier Marine sailor and airman on the front lines to the men and women of the medical profession who had the sorry task of saving those men menno menno menno no talk of rear-echelon rear types please V f Tf f It is for these people that we observe Veterans Veteran's Day also for those people currently serving in the Armed Forces for this is a day of volunteers all-volunteers many having chosen to serve their country instead of following richer pursuits These veterans dont don't necessarily want sympathy just an understanding understand understand- ing that they are people also no noone noone noone one to be looked down on just in inthe inthe the ilie same need of jobs girlfriends and children and friendships as the rest of us These veterans were a people on the receiving end of political instabilities instabilities instabilities suffering in ways we could never hope to understand or should hope to understand the emotional emotional emotional emo emo- and mental anguish of taking another persons person's life |
