Show Business Program Puts Students Back To Work L. L T c I Li LiA A 4 The is offering an intensive week eight-week course aimed at people who want to upgrade their business skills but c cant can't it a ta times tim away from financial or family obligations to finish a formal two year program The class is called The Office Administration Work to Program and was developed to help individuals with previous office experience reasonable typewriting speed and a desire to work to be beable beable beable able to return to time full-time office employment The week eight-week course covers five areas introductory word pro- pro keyboarding advanced word processing keyboarding business math record keeping and office procedures Included in these areas are on hands-on experience with r the latest office equipment and job seeking job keeping skills There here are two classes being ia taught at the same time with instructors instructors instructors tors Duane Jacobs Marylyn Hibbert rt and Nina Hibbert sharing the workload workload work workload load between the two classes The training will prepare the students to become an Administrative tive assistant Office manager Executive Secretary or a normal business secretary Its true that this is an intensive course and its it's easy to get behind comments Duane Jacobs teacher of one of the three classes and Program Coordinator but what's good about it is that because the students spend so much time together in class they start working Continued On Page 2 Y Business Program Puts Students ri z Back To Work I II I continued from page 1 closely with each other almost like a family Students joke about the fact that the course is tough by nicknaming nicknaming nicknaming nick nick- naming it but some t say the experience is closer to pregnancy than anything I think the fast pace is good says Mari Man Spencer a student almost finishing the course You dont don't get tired of one thing but can still retain what youve you've learned in the class 4 The average age of the students is between 37 and 45 years of age mostly female and are either single mothers or displaced homemakers But as D. D Jacobs notes Most times the employer views the 1 maturity in years as a plus rather t than a minus and will more likely beI be I offered a man management gement position 82 percent of the students are finding jobs within 90 days of finishing finishing finish finish- i ing the course 3 percent are dropping out i The majority of the students are using the course to either advance in their careers or to get a better paying job so they can earn rn enough t money to return to college and andI I finish their degree The program starts every eight weeks and runs runs five days a week seven hours a day from am a.m. to pm p.m. The next starting dates for the course are Nov Jan Feb Mar Apr and June Students wanting to take it for credit will receive 14 credit hours which can then be to other courses or colleges The entire cost for the course is and it includes books supplies parking permit tuition and other student fees Financial aid for forthe forthe forthe the class is also available Teaching this course has been one of the most rewarding things Ive I've done personally summed up D.
