Show backs educators campus community bombs On the Quad Friday Sept 29 in the afternoon sun officers pulled off what was termed by one faculty member as a miracle Lets Let's back up however to Wednesday Sept 27 for a Welcome Week question and answer panel held in the south cafeteria Student body president Jon Jordan along with four administrative staff members took the stage in order to answer any questions students might have about campus policy and procedure From the beginning it was apparent that the principal topics students wanted to address address address ad ad- dress were the teacher walkout that occurred on the previous previous previous pre pre- Monday and the proposed University of Utah student student student stu stu- stu- stu dent walkout slated to occur on Friday The question was will students walk out too The general consensus of the council members was that further action at this time would be unproductive and that would be best served by waiting until the next legislative legislative legislative legis legis- session in January to make a statement The Executive Councils Council's decision notwithstanding the emotion and strong student opinion voiced in the cafeteria that afternoon prompted Jordan to make a powerful spontaneous decision while sitting on the panel He announced he would organize a student rally to be beheld beheld beheld held Friday afternoon on the quad where students could show their support for education funding and publicly 7 t. t voice their opinions 4 And organize he did for the rest of that afternoon and the following Thursday Jordan worked tirelessly He put together what can only be called a major league tion It was nothing short of miraculous and one that any four year institution would be proud of Five state legislators legislators legislators legis legis- the of higher education our college president the faculty senate president and the president of the teachers association agreed on one days notice to take the hot seat in an open forum at Salt Lake Community College The fact that this happ happened ned here the way ay it did is astounding But equally astounding is the fact that less than students and 20 faculty members attended and that is the heart of the problem Education in Utah is where its it's at because apathy in Utah is running rampant Utahn's must really want it that way If they didn't it would change Most people like to gripe but very few want to get personally involved Y Jon Jordan gave us a chance to show the valley that we weare are a force in the community and we bombed 1 came to film us and didn't air the tape because the turnout was so pitiful The U of U had 1000 people at their rally and made the front page of the local section in the Tribune didn't get mentioned The Horizon is aware that many teachers were involved in teaching at noon on Friday and felt that business should go on as usual However when the Executive Council is willing to go to these lengths on behalf of education and more precisely the teachers themselves we feel that a reciprocating gesture of support would have been more appropriate We dont don't want to single out teachers as the bad guys Apathy is an equal opportunity employer at and thousands of students displayed their apathy that after after- noon Education is an issue that affects not only current students at but future generations to come The stand we make now will be the legacy we leave to our children It seems somewhat more important than coffee in the cafeteria is the fastest growing and most dramatically changing school in the state We have the most diverse population along with a college setting that is unique These qualities give us a tremendous potential for great great- ness We can forever be known as the apathetic indifferent indifferent indifferent ferent Tech or we can be spoken of as Salt Lake Community Com Corn f College one of the finest two year institutions in inthe inthe inthe the country The Horizon congratulates Jon Jordan and the rest of the executive council for their pioneering attitude and enthusiastic enthusiastic enthusiastic en en- attempt to give a chance to make a positive positive positive tive statement about education in Utah At the same time we deplore students and faculty who complain about legislators legislators legislators legis legis- and administrators who dont don't listen then listen then sit on their duffs when they do p |
