hours That has not been the case this year Parking lots have been filled to capacity since the first day of school Students have had to arrive at school as early as in order to insure themselves a parking spot and many students students students stu stu- dents have resorted to parking in lots reserved for the staff or parking off campus According to Campus Police Chief Brent Goodfellow ticketing the first week of school has been kept to a minimum He said We have such a large number of students students students stu stu- dents who are registered and there arent aren't enough parking places To give them tickets now that we have invited them on campus and they've registered I think is counter counter- productive Pat Ault administrative assistant to Dean John Duran however feels that policy should be changed She said II I believe that the college needs to address their policy on ticketing students in staff lots and I believe that tickets should be is issued issued issued is- is sued from the first day of the quarter She went on to say II We cannot be in our offices offices offices of of- to serve students if were we're driving around looking for a place to park She parked in the pay lot last week and paid the fee because there was no vac vacant i parking parking park park- ing in the staff lot Students had filled it up Susan Shipman a specialist in the financial aid department says II To me its it's just a fact of life of the first two weeks of school Its It's always been this way She has been parking parking parking park park- ing on 2200 West and walking to the College College College Col Col- lege Center Parking stall numbers furnished by Goodfellow's office speak for themselves So far this quarter annual student permits permits permits per per- mits have been sold 1050 quarterly 88 motorcycle 75 handicapped annual staff permits and 62 quarterly staff permits Total parking permits have been sold to date number and the college lots have only 2772 spaces including the pay lot That's an oversell rate of 0 twice the oversell rate of the University of Utah according to The Daily Utah Chronicle If ticketing has been limited the last two weeks according to figures from the Justice of the Peace and verified by Goodfellow it itis itis itis is not limited the rest of the year to 1600 tickets a month are issued Goodfellow said as many as tickets are issued per day Employees in inthe inthe inthe the Justices Justice's office are perturbed at having to deal with so many angry stu stu- J dents They say Susan Shipman Its lilts a fact facton on only I y 75 0 0 of f the of life tickets are table Recently a great deal more have been dismissed because there is a question as to whether or not signs posted at the entrances ces to the college are in compliance with State codes The signs are extremely small and are identical to other signs on campus that do not pertain to parking which some students feel is misleading Continued on page 2 s Parking Barking lots filled to capacity Continued from page 1 The signs also bear a great resemblance to bus stop markers which may also make them hard to see Goodfellow told the Horizon that larger signs had been ordered and should be beup beup beup up any day now In the mean time violator still will be ticketed because the Justice of Cf the Peace and Goodfellow do not agree that the college is in violation When asked if the administration was working on any solutions Goodfellow cited funding as the main stumbling block to additional additional additional addi addi- parking He also said that funding for snow removal and parking lot maintenance was the reason for paid parking in the first place and said that is the reason violations are areso areso areso so strictly enforced We try to set up regulations regulations regulations regula regula- so that students and faculty and people who park here will in fact buy parking per per- mits I personally think there needs to tobe tobe tobe be paid parking but there also needs to be some area of free parking for those who dont don't have the F funds said Gordon St Wilson director of student activities Glen Hensler Parking no problem so far Ive attended other colleges and there was always some area of free parking available Stolen parking permits have also become a problem on campus The hanging style permit is easily stolen from a jeep convertible or unlocked car Permanent sticker permits are available if requested |
