Show i f Show off your crafts on May 4 and 5 olamon Contributing Writer f. f The Craft Center w will ill be beholding beholding holding a craft show where patrons may purchase handmade handmade handmade hand hand- made craft goods made by students and others It will be beheld held May 4 and 5 from 10 am a.m. to 2 pm p.m. The craft show is a biannual biannual biannual bian bian- nual event where students and others may exhibit and sell sell any craft waft items The show will be held in the College Center south cafeteria Instructor Kevin Frazier teaches stained glass pr procedures procedures ce- ce dures sil- sil lapidary rock polishing and pottery in craft classes that the college offers The college currently offers offers offers of of- fers credit for some pottery classes Frazier says this allows allows allows al al- al- al lows students s. s who didn't have time for the class on a non-credit non basis to take advantage advantage advantage ad ad- vantage of the facilities Frazier has taught at for 12 years He practices the theart theart theart art of Raku firing as a method of baking clay day pots This oriental method bakes much faster than conventional firing The pots are taken from the kiln where they are placed in combustible items They soon catch fire causing them to react with the clay and colorants According to Frazier anyone could own a kiln as as they are are relatively easy to make Frazier says that the Craft Center is a place where students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents can spend leisure time He also said however that only 28 percent of beginning pottery students make it to intermediate pottery Only one student is in his advanced advanced advanced ad ad- pottery class this term A silversmith lapidary course at night is offered to students who wish to make their own jewelry Instructor Ralph Greenwood teaches this c class ass on a non-credit non basis on Monday night Another option for students students students stu stu- dents who desire Fine Arts skills is the stained-glass stained course taught Wednesday nights by Kevin Frazier Both oth Bothof of these courses are offered during the daytime if pre ar ranged Pottery is a popular course that is available at night and during the day Frazier said the secret to good pottery is practice Creating pottery is somewhat harder than it looks He said that if the student puts time into it the skill will eventually eventual eventual- ly come came In spring summer and occasionally fall classes lasses Frazier invites students to his home for a demonstration of Raku firing About third one-third of my pottery students come cometo cometo to this school non-school function said Frazier The Craft Center is open from 9 am a.m. to 9 pm p.m. Monday Monday Monday Mon Mon- day through Wednesday 9 am a.m. to 5 pm p.m. Thursday and Friday and on Saturday from 10 am a.m. to 2 pm p.m. If you are interested in entering the craft show contact Kevin Frazier at before 5 pm p.m. May 3 |
