Show Civil Rights Day Resolution passes Student Senate Erika J. J Schuster Contributing Writer A recent student senate resolution asks that Civil Rights Day be observed at with no classes held because because because be be- cause Civil Rights is an issue that affects free people should divert itself from any racist image The Student Senate passed Resolution 89 7 on Feb 14 with 12 for and only 2 against in response to the student outcry that classes were inappropriately held this past Civil Rights Day This resolution will now be sent to the Institutional Council and Faculty Senate who decide dedde the academic calender Because next years year's calender is already set it would not affect their l decision dedsion until the 91 90 school year Student Senator Dan Metcalf Metcalf Metcalf Met- Met calf one of the resolutions resolution's l. l st he disturbed disturbed disturbed dis dis- sponsors stated J d. d was at th the publicity our oure e school received on Martin Luther King Day It was to see our school on the local news in a negative context said Metcalf I hope that the passing of this resolution helps the Faculty Senate and Institutional Council see that there are students concerned with Civil Rights issues The resolution asks that the appropriate changes be made in the school calender to allow the observation of Civil Rights Day The resolution resolution resolution tion does not however late which current day off would be relinquished Metcalf said I 1 did not want to get into a shouting match over which other day would be sacrificed I hope things work out within the Institutional Council and Faculty Senate |
