Show Tuition hikes deserve better explanation During the last October some of Utah's students were involved in protests and voter registration drives in an effort to eliminate the cutting of taxes Their efforts were recognized and the tax initiatives failed While some of the student protestors and other students were celebrating ing mg the State Board of Regents were devising a plan to increase tuition seven to nine percent higher than 1988 89 Some may ask themselves What were we fighting for anyway If we were fighting to keep our tuition down why is it going up Horizon oriz n believes that the Board of Regents should provide some answers The first thing that students should realize is that tuition tuition tuition tui tui- tion increases happen The price of gaso gasoline ine goes up as does the price of food and yes so does tuition We as students must realize that the world we live in costs I money and so does our education We must accept tuition tuition tuition tui tui- tui- tui tion increases as a way of life Horizon however feels that I what is happening to our tuition after it goes to the state merits some explanation from the Board of Regents Students are not exempt from paying taxes either We pay our percentage of taxes just like everyone else along with tuition The question remains however as asto asto asto to where all of this money is going For example there was a tuition increase of eight percent last year at the U of U but the state matched that increase with appropriations of less than one percent It doesn't take a math genius to figure out what is happening The state is taking more and more money from students but they dont don't have much to show for it We at Horizon feel that an explanation is necessary as to why the state keeps taking more money and giving less back Tuition increases increases increases in in- creases can be bet better er accepted ed by students if the Board of Regents was very helpful and informative to the stu stu- stu- stu dents When they needed the students they used them to push their cause in defeating the tax initiatives The tax initiatives were defeated and now the students have been left in the dark concerning tuition hikes The evidence of growth is apparent here at more than any other school in Utah Why cant can't the state give a little more to schools who need it They must have the money because we have been paying more The evidence of growth is apparent here at more than any other school in Utah Why cant can't the state give a little more to schools who need it They must have the money because we have been paying more than ever before Even with Gov Bangerter's ninth in ning plan to give back some of the taxes there must still be a surplus or someone is getting richer while the students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents get poorer |
