Show Letters to the Editor t t Police say no noto noto noto to A B and C Dear Editor The presidents s r t- ten s of r ai v law Iw l V enforcement organ organizations za on have investigated the facts surrounding the tax initiatives initiatives initiatives initia initia- tives and their potential effect on the level of public safety within the state The three as asso associations associations as- as so agree that the facts clearly demonstrate that approval approval approval ap ap- ap- ap of the initiatives would result in a severe impact impact impact im im- im- im pact on Utah law environ environ- ment Law enforcement in Utah is having a difficult time main- main the level of public safety which the state presently en en- joys Currently there are 16 law officers in Utah per 1000 citizens compared to the national national national na na- na- na average of 21 per thousand Approval of the tax limitation initiatives on the November ballot would bring about severe reductions both bothin in law enforcement programs and personnel Such reductions would cost fewer tax dollars but what will happen to auto fire and homeowners homeowner's insurance premiums Fewer officers will mean a longer response time timeto to crimes traffic accidents and medical emergencies Responses ses will have to be both by officer location and availability v as as aswell well Y ll a situations situation's severity Many people have experienced traumatic events such as in incases incases incases cases of heart attacks drowning drowning drowning drown drown- ing and choking where minutes can make the or life-or- death difference We appreciate that tax tax- voters payers-voters will and should l decide a level of governmental tal services they pay for and receive We strongly ment that voters look at the facts before making a final decision We believe that three tax initiatives may be bewell bewell bewell well motivated but are poorly thought out They would randomly randomly randomly ran ran- cut every government service in Utah without distinction distinction distinction dis dis- dis- dis and without tion Each of us has sworn to serve and protect the people of Utah We write to tell you that we believe these initiatives are area a direct threat to our ability to carry out these ese goals Wayne Shepard Utah Chiefs of Police Association Clair Poulson Utah Sheriffs Asso Association Ben Lemmon Utah Peace Officers Association Asso Association a- a tion ii j J- J r Need more caution rear near area Recently as the parking lot north of ith of f the CC CC was bY being ing resurfaced part of the process was to prepare the lot by applYing applying applying ap- ap plying a thin layer of tar on the gravel base before the asphalt asphalt asphalt as as- was put down As the CC was completed new carpet carpet carpet car car- pet was Installed Unfortunately Unfortunately tun tely tar and carpet do not mix One evening there were some sonie individuals knowingly or unknowingly we arent aren't sure that walked through the tar and onto the carpet Many hours had to be spent on on hands and knees trying to remove the tar and cleaning the carpets Similar acts have occurred from the automotive and welding shops Individuals Individuals Individuals In In- have tracked in oil grease or grime and it takes extra time and effort in cleaning cleaning cleaning clean clean- ing up behind them We would hope that in the future individuals will be more cautious and aware of their surroundings as they enter buildings and not track in unnecessary unnecessary unnecessary un un- un- un necessary mud dirt grease or tar Bill Taylor I |
