Show f- f Homeless families on waiting wafting list for shelter aid Eugenia Assistant Feature Editor THE three homeless shelters in Salt Lake City have waiting lists Patrick Hoagland a volunteer N and public relations lations coordinator at Travelers Aid Society who o operates tes l the Salt Lake Community Shelter and Resource Center said that there is not enough room at present to house all the people who would like to stay in the Shelter The f family mily shelter has a capacity capacity capacity capac capac- ity anywhere from 27 to 29 families families families lies depending ei on the sizes of the famil families es he said We provide shelter for single women and we have about 40 women per night As of last week Hoagland said there ther were almost 30 families on the waiting list to get into the family family family fam fam- ily shelter Both the mens men's and women's shelters have a waiting 1 fir list as well The shelter is staffed with 68 people the majority are time full empl employees y Hoagland said that the shelter tries to work with the people on the waiting list as best they can To get into the Salt Lake Community Shelter it can can take two to three three weeks We resource them out as best we can but its it's pretty difficult so most of those people are living in th their ir cars or on the streets until they can find shelter he said See Sec Shelter on pa page e 12 1 1 a Shelter Continued front from page 9 About 50 percent of the people the shelter serves are from the Wasatch front and the other 50 percent are traveling or coming through Salt Lake City for one reason reason reason rea rea- son or another he be explained Hoagland said there are a variety variety variety vari vari- ety of reasons these families end up at the Shelter Some experience difficulty with unemployment medical reasons divorce drugs or alcohol He added that some families families families lies are so dysfunctional that they can not maintain a lifestyle outside the Shelter Another reason families need a shelter according to Hoagland is that there is no affordable housing available in the Salt Lake City area Things are starting to happen in hi the housing industry but he said that it is taking a long time Hoagland said that the usual stay at the Shelter was a day 90 limit but its it's no longer that way Now when a person enters the Shelter a caseworker assesses the family situation and if the family decides to stay in Salt Lake City and become sufficient self-sufficient then they set up goals with the case case- worker Hoagland said that the goals must be followed by the person person person per per- son who set them and they are reviewed reviewed reviewed re re- re- re viewed periodically Hoagland said that some people are here for a couple of weeks just to get some day labor and move on onto onto onto to their destination |
