Show Establishing Athletic program at Brian OMara Contributing Writer A arent aren't a big deal at but ATHLETICS ATHLETICS' Norma Carr Athletic Director is trying to establish a program that will change that Carr sees athletics as more than just sports She sees it as a way to increase public awareness of f the school bolster pride for Jor students and the com om- com com- Sports are re good fun entertainment she said One of the major goals goals' of f the athletics department is to get the students faculty and staff involved Carr said she came cam to the college looking for a good positive challenge Currently the athletics only sanctions one sporting event men event men and women's basket basket- ball Carr wants to be the local ath- ath ti l ti s i one number umber one ne choice The current Bruins boast six residents non-residents for the mens men's team and three for the Athletics at the ColI College ge face many obstacles the major one being public opinion and physical facilities There are plans to change that The college is scheduled sched to start construction in January on a new 15 million dollar sports facility The facility will ill encompass p physical education education education tion recreation athletics and some I. I ca do Some of the features of the complex include a sports arena with seating capacity of and support facilities for sporting events including including including in in- locker rooms and officiating rooms Other facilities will include a separate gymnasium gym gym- which which be sectioned six off-six can racquetball racquetball racquetball rac- rac courts a strength and fitness room an aerobic and d dance nce room and a hanging track Certainly the complex will bolster public support and help in recruiting the local talent It is expected to take 18 months to complete said Carr is the largest community college inthe in inthe inthe the state and will shortly be the second largest state owned college yet it has only one sanctioned sport sport basketball basketball Carr said Community and ald students students' are anxious to see sports su such h as as baseball softball and vol vol- She is excited at such a prospect but says it will be the responsibility of the student student student stu stu- dent body ody to toilet the administration know of such desires Athletics at is in a very unique position Carr said They dont don't have to follow the traditional traditional traditional male role-model role sports programs They have the opportunity to develop a program the st students den s and c co community want a step at a time time time-a a privilege few other schools share I aW I |
