B Colaizzi Columnist again the legislature legislature legislature legisla legisla- ONCE ture has clearly shown their dedication to higher education this time by seriously under funding it Now I realize that they have only so much money to send cr cn onH and anH there ic is a a lot of nf C O L A I Z Z r JP- JP P W stress provided by the lobbyists trying to influence their de decisions But each legislator actively sought that job This year they have funded less than 30 cents of every dot dot- dol dollar lar needed for higher education Last year they funded about 70 cents of every dollar This a very sighted short-sighted attitude Education is a long term long term investment in the future of our state and our country When you look at the world si situation situation situa situa- a- a tion espe especially ally the economic warfare being waged against us by the Japanese the importance of funding education should be obvious We as a country need to increase our educational capabilities espe especially ally in mathematics scientific scientific and engineering applications Proper education could also reduce the need for some of the social services For example it has been shown in int Canada that educational programs can effectively reduce the number of of people in the correctional institutions So why build more prisons if instead we can reduce the number number number num num- ber of our citizens who must live in them How can we get the additional funding for higher education education tion One way would be to raise taxes As a single person in a state that encourages large families I dont don't mind paying my share of the educational costs But should my share be larger than that of a person with four children NO Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps Per Per- haps instead the state should decrease or remove entirely tax deductions for having children The more children a family has the more resources they use It may be time to face reality and have families pay their fair share and not skate on the single people We could always raise tuition This would force the people using the education system to pay the costs for it The problem here is that it would then limit education to the wealthy espe especially ally if it the federal government keeps cutting cutting cutting cut cut- ting funding Bake sales Nah Nan There are no easy answers Pick up the phone or write a letter to your legislators Let them know that we as students believe the future of our country depends on higher education |
