I r I r. r By Kimbal Ingram v f Perhaps one of the most forgotten words is the word perspective perspective perspective per But unknowingly its it's used everyday Once we give our opinion weve we've shown our perspective perspective tive but we dont don't recognize ize it as such A lot of times we disguise it by saying its it's our position When in polite conversation the taboo subjects of religion or politics arise positions are taken lines are drawn and minds are set We will discuss sometimes argue that what we believe is the only right way conveniently forgetting we dont don't know everything There was once an advertisement for a candy bar that bar that had graphics showing a boy lying down then all of a sudden lifting off into space because t the e candy bar was so light tasting Perspective is like the graphic no not light tasting A lot of complaints were given to the recent registration system and justifiably so But with perspective it was so trivial And a lot of ot things that happen here really are trivial seen with perspective For those of us who had tone- tone phones with a redial button it was not as bad to register as those who had just tone-phones tone without a redial who had it better than those with the old fashioned rotary There was even one person who had to use a pay Can you imagine always dropping a quarter for a couple of hours Yet we all complained Sure we sympathized with tho those e who had the old-fashioned old equipment but I admit to feeling better off for having invested in a redial equipped phone But now lets let's lift off the earth a little enough to see Salt Lake County Could we see s e those who cant can't even afford a community college education Those who might be spending ever every cent to keep a family alive e J Or could we see see the parents parents-of parent of the I child thild who needs S sp al operation and are r g on dri doria a ri I to afford it t Lets Let's lift a little higher higher to to see see th the state of Utah There are many portions of the state that are facing joblessness farm foreclosures and andin in a small part of Utah the powers of the legal system are sq squared ared off against outs hold-outs accused of serious crimes with family members of both sides worrying if a loved one is going to come home safely By going a bit higher we observe the entire country The problems of the state are multiplied of course 50 times over And one man has to make decisions decisions' over all these problems By going higher we can see that these problems are now all over the world starvation disease war and andall andall andall all manner of suffering that we observe in our newspapers and tele tele- visions A couple of hours on the phone does seem trivial at this point But the real point of perspective is isto isto isto to each of us our own problems seem most important whether we just spent some time on the phone to register or we have every single problem listed above I suggest we combine perspective with memory By remembering that the other person has his or her own problems and may not see yours as important as his or hers needless arguments and hurt feelings could disappear We are fort te H r at When we graduate well we'll be in a position to drastically improve our lives Perhaps then well we'll help someone someone someone some some- one become a student whose worse problem might only be a few hours on the phone |
