Show I Facts for Freshmen I John B. B Colaizzi Columnist Its It's fall quarter meaning a lot of the students wandering around with dazed looks on their faces are in a college environment environment environ environ- 0 ment for the first time Looking back on my first quarter at I 1 realized there are several things that would have made the transition smoother had I 1 known them earlier While w t o t k f S all of this information is readily available from various sources on campus I 1 hope this will give you new students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents a little head start Youve You've probably already been on the second floor of the College Center This area is home of the blocks sort of a sunken building-block building approach to providing an environment to study and socialize in the windows financial aid admissions veterans registration and transcripts and the Academic Advising office which is also home of Drug and Alcohol Counseling The large hole in the middle of the second floor looks down on the Sunken Lounge where many forums activities and entertainments are held There are libraries on both the Redwood Road Campus Campus Campus Cam Cam- pus and the South City Campus but the best library for doing serious research is the Marriot Library on the U of ofU ofU ofU U campus A valid student ID will allow you access to this library Other good sources include the Whitmore library part of the Salt Lake County system and the main branch of the Salt Lake City system One of the most confusing aspects of college can be bethe bethe bethe the faculty I mean the class differences among the ty Not the fact that they teach different classes but the fact that there are different classifications for faculty Some of these distinctions make no real difference to the student but are useful in helping to understand faculty politics Tenured faculty have successfully completed a probationary probationary probationary proba proba- period usually seven years and are now official members of the academic bureaucracy Like government workers th they y have to really screw up to get fired Some full time faculty without tenure ar are working towards it while some are on a non tenure non tenure track Adjunct faculty refers to those faculty members who do not have a nine or nine nine- or month 12 appointment They are hired on a quarter-by-quarter quarter basis with no guarantee that they will have a job next quarter They are let go by bythe bythe bythe the simple process of not being asked to return This can be stressful try to be nice to the adjuncts Then there are the different faculty titles that indicate placement on the salary schedule These are from top to bottom professor associate professor assistant professor and instructor Where a faculty member is on the scale depends on department needs experience education and occasionally upon magical formulas known only to the administration For example a professor should have over 12 years experience teaching at the college level and anda a PhD Ph.D. or 50 credit hours past a masters master's degree So with all this in mind how does loes one address members members members mem mem- bers of the faculty The easiest way Ive I've found is to address address address ad ad- dress them by their first names and if they dont don't like it they'll let you know i i s v V VA t 6 A AI At t I t t i e V Vt Shir t k J.
