| Show Rainey becomes prototype entrepreneurship student for single parents program Mary MaryAnne Anne Anderegg Staff Writer D Debra ebra Rainey has always dreamed of owning her own business the perennial entrepreneur said Bob Cox one of her instructors in a new program developed by Sterling Francom as part of a coalition of federal and state governments and private businesses The purpose of the program is to help economically disadvantaged single parents become financially in- in dependent The program Entrepreneurship for Single Parents ESP is taught as a series of workshops to help students learn the process involved in starting a busi busi- ness Rainey who is a single mother of an year old daughter enrolled in the program because she wanted to start fulfilling my dreams Rainey has had the idea for her business for some time and had pulled together a group of people interested in being her partners Now she said they needed the impetus and financial expertise expertise expertise ex ex- ex- ex pertise to off kick-off the business Rainey and her partners constructed constructed constructed con con- a business plan and developed procedures for customer service under the tutelage of the ESP program They spent over hours preparing the business plan Rainey was one of 25 single parents to finish the program and in inthe inthe inthe the process became well-acquainted well with many of the sponsors of the pro pro- gram Because of her diligence and success she has become the student spokesperson for the program Rainey a member of Delta Epsilon Chi DEX a professional organization tion here on campus says the business business business busi busi- ness plan won second place in the state DEX entrepreneurship event She was asked by her ESP sponsors to speak to the state legislators who wanted to know just what help disadvantaged disadvantaged disadvantaged parents need to become financially independent Raineys Rainey's problem was that she and her partners had no funds no collateral and no room in their homes to establish the business How can I become independent independent independent inde inde- pendent if I have no access to the tools I need to make my independence independence independence inde inde- wondered Rainey In her speech Rainey addressed specific needs impoverished single parents have in gaining economical stability lack of training lack of adequate adequate adequate ade ade- quate transportation lack of quality day care and lack of sufficient funds to meet even essential needs all stand in their way I was the only speaker who gave the legislators any recommendations recommendations recommendations to help us Rainey said She noted that the legislators seemed u p v 1 r 1 L t i 4 A 4 H JP 5 I F I 4 J t 4 I I it I.
