I r t Jed Pease 1 Gum chewers bite your tongues Dear Editor I would like to ask the student body if they feel that now they are in thereal the thereal thereal with real world and are adults if perhaps they should behave as adults In elementary school one was usually reprimanded for gum by having to place said wad on ones one's nose In high school if one was caught popping chewing gum one were instructed instructed in in- instructed to spit it out preferably in a garbage can but gum seemed to find its way to stair railings and nd under desk tops I thought silly me that in an adult environment one would not expect expect expect ex ex- to encounter such poor behavior I was wrong It is one thing to have to avoid a I spit globule on the pavement or on the sidewalk It is quite another to have to I avoid one on the stairs inside a build build- ing Not only is it revolting but it can be very dangerous An example is the recent outbreak of tuberculosis That's right TB This particular strain is more deadly deadly deadly dead dead- ly than than the cases that were fought L years ago spitting on the ine sidewalk was against the law I am not sure of the exact reason such behavior I 1 Iwas was made illegal but my guess would be because of all the deaths caused by tuberculosis The disease is spread by particles usually originating from a glob of spit that an infected individual so thoughtfully left behind As to the overall general rudeness I think that those who are guilty of immaturity Immaturity immaturity im Im- maturity and unkind behavior toward I their fellow students do not need to be j reminded that it is time to start acting J like adults The glory days of high school are long over However to those who do grow up Its It's a big bad world out there and it will eat you up Kelly Riddle J AT building occupants accused of sexual harassment Dear Editor Ive I've had the great displeasure of having haying a class dass in the Automotive Trades Building this quarter It has not ceased to amaze me that a building such as this and some of its occupants continue to exist on a campus of higher learning It is an outstanding example of violations of health and human decency codes The students who are required to enter that building are immediately subjected subjected sub sub- to a gross violation of their lungs Even when the College Center had a smoking cafeteria there were optional entrances to the building which I made madea a habit of utilizing But the Automotive and ATC dont don't provide students and staff with safe polluted non-polluted access to halls and classrooms If that isn't offensive enough to begin with then we have to go up the open stairway Many who are lounging not studying subject others particularly female students and staff to sexual abuse and harassment They look up women's skirts eye them over and subject them to many verbal insults and demeaning gestures It is a personally traumatic experience each day I have to go to class dass there and makes my learning experience there very difficult I know many other women who feel the same trauma that I do but have been reluctant to speak out because it might make the harassment worse The Advanced Technology Building has the same smoking problem But I haven't seen the same intensity of sexual harassment there Thank goodness the stairs arent aren't as open But the mens men's rest room is situated under one flight anc and the smoking section surrounds the other flight of stairs I would hope that the stairways will soon be enclosed from the view of those sitting around and the smoking section confined and vented properly I hope this doesn't fall on deaf ears Denise W. Rosado a hustle Dear Editor A lot of times I ask myself where should students buy study books for a convenient price That is a question for each student approaching his her next quarter How to get out of financial troubles how to manage shrinking budgets Further ideas may be useful for those who are looking for an easy tion Many students buy books in the bookstores Some of them are used and can be purchased for a lower price For example Government in America sells for ne new and old The used books were bought from the students for 50 of the original price Another place where students have access to books is the Book Swap In order to sell a book a student has to fill out a paper where he has written the price hed he'd like to get for the book The prices vary but are more often lower than Utan the prices of books in the bookstore Students can get money for forr their books only after the book is sold If the book k is stolen is not held sible In order to get the book to the book Jook swap students have to leave their bags somewhere before the entrance this explains how I lost my bag Cant Can't get someone to watch the bags Another thing students have to remember is to come pick up the book or OI money if the book was sold on time If the student is late the book becomes becomes be be- comes property of This is not a bad profit is it One more source of revenue to the from this whole selling action is getting 20 of f th the price marked by the by-the the owner I understand has a lot of pf work and is actually helping students to sell self or buy the books but 20 This is a alot alot lot ot of money for students The question each student sh should uld ask k him herself is if we re really need this third person involved in our business Why cant can't we work out our own book swap Where Even on the quad I know it is hard to organize but why not try it Maybe the student activities director can help us Lets Let's do it Agnieszka |
