Show International Students share cultural experiences Rachel Contributing Writer M sure that each international international IM I'M student has many Interesting interesting interesting in- in experiences to share stated John Wiemer academic standards director Salt Lake Community College has 98 international students from 3 3 J countries There are 31 fro a n Japan 13 from Thailand 1 from Tasmania and others from countries like Israel Kuwait Germany Singapore Nigeria and more Wiemer said It lilt takes a lot of courage to study in a foreign country with a different lan lan- guage Two of those 98 international international international in in- students are Kim and Michaela Welk Kim is from Stockholm Sweden She first came to the United States as a foreign exchange student Kim graduated from Granger High and went back to Sweden She returned to the US U.S. in June to continue her education Kim really likes the opportunities offered here in inthe inthe inthe the US U.S. She said It lilt is so big Kim st started learning English in the fourth grade in Sweden but she did have a tt fl mJ takes ft a lot vf r 11 in a iri fore ui 4 r fl 1 J 1 t l a n e d tr hard t time me with the slang when she first got here Kim said I miss Stockholm the most and my mom of course But one of the hardest hardest hardest hard hard- est things about being an international international international in in- student is meeting your host family for the first time Luckily for Kim they all get along great Kim said The liThe US U.S. is different in many ways from Sweden but I like it a lot Michaela Welk is from West Germany She said I had a hard time getting used to all the fast food I dont don't like it Michaela thinks that not only does fast food take some getting used to but so does the language and the high price of state out-of-state tuition One of Michaela's other concerns concerns concerns con con- cerns was the dating game here in th the US U.S. She said I dont don't understand why you have to decide where your relationship stands after only two or three dates Michaela volunteered as a aGerman aGerman aGerman German interpreter for the 1990 Utah Goodwill Games She had to postpone her flight home to Germany just to do it But she said I learned a lot from that experience experience experience ex ex- and it had its good is lIil in many ways from S.
