N S u t Photo by Sami Black Carol Wood by Deanne Welti Everyday her father would add up the family's budget on the back of an envelope and she would watch in tion He was the best accounting accounting accounting ac ac- counting teacher Ive I've ever had Carol Wood reported during an interview last week In fact fact she added numbers numbers numbers num bers were always a part of home and living It is fortunate fortunate fortunate for for- for that Carols Carol's father taught her to appreciate appreciate appreciate numbers because she is isnow isnow isnow now one of the most favorite accounting and marketing in instructors instructors instructors in- in on campus Carol the third of eight children was raised on a ranch in Lyman Utah She claims that it was the supportive supportive supportive tive environment of the smalltown small smalltown smalltown town that encouraged her to continue on with her tion There she said people were taught that material wealth and the value of being human were non There was also a great deal of importance placed on ed uca- uca tion So after graduating from Wayne High School Carol ventured off to Cerritos J Jr r. r College in Norwalk California At Norwalk Carol earned her Associate Degree in accounting and her class nominated her as the outstanding accounting student student student stu stu- dent of the year But Norwalk Norwalk Norwalk Nor Nor- walk served only as a stepping steppingstone steppingstone steppingstone stone for her After Norwalk Carol graduated from the University of Utah with her BS in accounting and later she earned her Masters Degree from Utah State University In 1969 Carol began her teaching career a at t UTe Here she feels fortunate to be a teacher Teaching is one of the choicest professions anyone anyone anyone any any- one could ever have especially especially especially es es- at our college She teaches accounting as well as business management and marketing Business Law she said is one of her favorite classes to teach however she's in the process of individualizing individualizing individualizing indi indi- and updating it Carol believes that there needs to be a lot of updating in education She would like to see the present grading system revised because she feels it is an inaccurate way of measuring students' students pro pro- She therefore plans planson on doing research in grading and also in student tion In addition Carol would like to get her PhD Ph.D. in the near future Carol is just as busy outside outside outside out out- side of school as she is in it The mother of a thirteen- thirteen year-old year daughter Carol owns and manages several small apartments throughout Salt Lake She has been on the Board of Directors for The Officers Officer's of Apartments Association Association Association As As- of Utah for eight years and she lectures throughout the valley to apartment owners She also writes on the side hoping to someday publish her work On top of all that Carol loves horseback riding hiking and Shakespeare It has also been rumored that she loves desserts desserts desserts des des- especially pecan pie Not surprisingly Carol thinks the key elements in success are perseverance and self People need to persevere in the constructive constructive constructive tive areas of life school family and other endeavors If a person can just hang on each day will bring him more courage and more ties The main plain thing he should tell himself as he carries carries carries car car- ries out each day is I I am the best If a person knows hes he's the best then he can accomplish accomplish accomplish whatever he wants to do If he lie can have faith in himself and persevere towards his goal then others will believe believe believe be be- lieve in him too Perhaps it was her small smalltown smalltown smalltown town upbringing that influenced influenced influenced in in- Carol Wood to persevere persevere persevere per per- severe so successfully towards her goal But whatever it was the students and everyone here at are proud to have her as an instructor |
