Show i g f rt Letters To The Editor Dear Editor As pointed out in the November edition of Points West there has been tuition increases in the name of computer literacy I feel that is is an unwarranted student expense Who will use the additional new computers How will students be trained on the computers I think that those who will use the computers will be perhaps people peole who least need computer literacy I can imagine myself using a computer open to any student But I have a computer background Yes computers are marvelous m machines chines and have a large impact on society But unless you know what to do a computer is impossible to deal with As a Computer Science lab assistant I deal with students who have minimal computer experience Any of the assignments has instructions on how to do it A student doesn't just walk in and whip out the answers In any computer system there are procedures for getting on and off A person ignorant of the instructions isn't going to get very far on a computer Once a student has a bad had experience from being untrained trying to work with a computer how hard will it be to get them to voluntarily sign ign on again How much will win the tuition increase and new computer center mean to them My opinion is that we should leave the computer literacy and training where they now are in beginning computer classes Lets Let's stop fooling ourselves that people are going to learn about computers just because they are available Will you be one of the open computer users Sincerely Alma Smith |
