J fill 4 r r by byEd Ed Lt Lite Lile e to r- r Jt Managing U Ed Editor L Every state college throughout Utah was represented on November 24 when nearly 2000 students gathered on the south steps at the State Capital in Salt Lake City to voice their feelings about the budget cuts by Governor Norman Bang Bangerter The day was clear and warm as the students gathered pl placards cards and banners their the future of the Education waving to express feelings concerning Higher colleges throughout the State of Utah-their Utah educational future We are the future of this state and we are here to try to create the promise of a abright abright abright bright progressive future We are here today to impact that future future we we are not here to relate second hand concerns nor to represent second hand constituencies was the official statement of the students this demonstration is student initiated and student orchestrated Commissioner of Higher Education Rolfe Kerr outlined the concerns of his office but at the same time he asked the students to give the Governor the respect he deserves and to hear him out The response from the students was somewhat negative but Kerr was able to relate what he had intended Our plea to the governor is to make a budget recommendation with Higher Higher- Higher Education Education tion as a priority but please give the Governor your courtesy respect an and l t a attention tt en ti on r- r J vc- vc t v vAs no c 1 As each speaker er gave their stat statements merits the students responded Many of the students were in favor of the Gov Governors Governor's proposals and many many were d definitely finitely the not-the response was both ways It was when Governor Bangerter came out of the Capitol that feelings began to run high As the speech progressed it was evident that some of the students were not for his policies At one point the Governor stopped for a moment then let those present know that he would go on only if they would calm down and let him talk As he concluded h he was greeted with an ovation He did say that he was trying to work out a plan that would allow Higher Education to continue in favor of the stu students His budget recommendation recommendation m might mean higher taxes Quoting from the Utah Student Association on official statement Our plea to the citizens of this great state is to realize the direct relationship between Higher Education and the economy and to invest in Utah's future by supporting legislated revenue increases into Higher Education We are not here to listen sympathetically to the pathos and woes the state currently faces b but t to challenge state leaders to meet the test of adversity with courage and long range vision INVEST IN US-BUILD US OUR SKILLS-HELP SKILLS US BE MORE PRODUCTIVE Other speakers during the rally included Sue Marie Young Board of Regents Chair Mark Crockett student HR Dick Alston Chair and Bill Honick student S SR R.
