Show New Law Encourages Good Teachers i WASHINGTON Utah educators and students will receive direct benefits benefi from a new law its sponsors say will encourage good teachers to share their skills and recruit the best students for future careers in education Three Utah teachers will be named to the National Talented Teachers Fellow Fellowship hip Program each year said Sen Orrin Hatch R He said he expects to win many of the scholarships set up to encourage outstanding high school graduates to become teachers This initiative will attract the brightest students to teaching It will give new freedom to the best teachers we already have It will encourage teachers to stay in the profession The program is experimental but it itis itis itis is mod modeled led after the 1958 Defense Education Act which successfully brought many students into mathematics and science teaching I am convinced that with very little federal intervention new paths will be developed to lead able students into teaching Hatch said Hatch said two se separate rate programs will aid teacher recruitment and retention The Carl D. D Perkins Scholarship Scholarship Scholarship Scholar Scholar- ship Program sets up scholarships to encourage outstanding high school students to become teachers A maximum of people are to receive awards each year from 1986 through 1990 The measure authorizes 86 million to be spread over the life of the program The National Talented Teachers Fellowship Program will award one- one year fellowships to one talented teacher in each congressional district Utah has three districts The fellowships are to allow the teachers to take sabbaticals to develop special programs or to develop staff enrich enrich- ment Ten million dollars are authorized to be spent over four years 1986 through 1989 |
