Show Alex Stecker finds his niche here at by Rich Campbell Being uneducated is a terrible disease stated Alex Stecker the UTe h Library Director If this is true it can be said that Stecker is very healthy in inthe inthe the educational area y Languages can be classed as one of the major areas of Stecker's studies As a tt boy growing up in Brooklyn he spoke four languages by the time he was four years old He was six years old before he learned English Since that time he has developed his skills in foreign languages to the point that he speaks or reads 14 languages Included in the long list of languages spoken are the 1 European tongues and various Middle Eastern and ancient dialects His interest in the Middle East began while he was attending B. B BYU Y U. U where h his s studies began in the Hebrew language He received a BA in history from B. B BYU Y U. U This began a long line of studies in related Hebrew-related areas His achievements include a Masters in Judaic studies from Brandeis University University University Uni Uni- in Massachusetts and a PhD Ph.D. in Studies and Philosophy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem where he was one of the only Christian graduates that the school has ever had Along with these degrees Stecker has also done post-doctoral post studies in Bonn Germany and at Oxford He has also taught history and languages atthe atthe at atthe the College of the Holy Cross and Business Ethics at Harvard His interest in education is what led Stecker to It has been said that everyone will have to be re-educated re at least twice in a lifetime and schools such as are responsible for this retraining Stecker stated that he wanted to be a part of this retraining program He has been with for just over three years Travel is one of Stecker's passions He has traveled all over the Middle East Europe and many of the communist block countries Freedom is precious to Stocker Stecker who is very proud to be an American His freedom is most appreciated appreciated appreciated after living in in Israel under a dictatorship and his travels in countries where freedoms are non Th The story of of Alex Stecker doesn't end here ere At the present time he is learning Chinese by computer in In preparation to tr travel vel to China and the Orient When asked if he would have done anything different with his life Stecker simply said study harder and travel more j |
