A I I- I d f fi i k 16 t Contestants Contestants Timothy Wiser Brad Kemp Carpentry Apprentice r i Named State Champ Local of the Carpenters Union of Utah itself in the last few days when all three of the top contestants in the annual state carpenters apprenticeship contest held at SL were announced All three apprentices are members of that Local Over-all Over winner is Steven Gallegos who will represent the State of Utah in inthe inthe the international contest for apprentice carpenters in Las Vegas this coming September He receives a cash award of and a handsome trophy for his first place effort For the first time in the history of the Utah apprenticeship contest for carpenters a woman achieved second place in the the state Diane Copeland actually beat out comers all-comers in two of the three parts of the total exam The contest includes a hour 4 written test hour half transit examination tion and an hour 8 manipulative test Taking third place was Jon Belch J r Utah has had top apprentices for many years In the past five years members have placed nationally on three occasions The national competition pits the top carpenter apprentice against his peers from each of the other states and Canada Don Nielson state director of Utah Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship and Training notes that the judges in the state contest Lloyd Jacklin and Russell Rose were extremely conscientious in their responsibilities Mr Nielsen says too that the showing by Diane Copeland in earning second place in the contest should be tie an incentive to other women desirous of taking their taking their place in this skilled craft Carpenter apprentices undergo a year 4 program They receive on the job training during the day and attend Utah Technical College at Salt Lake or another institution operating an apprenticeship program at night v |
