Show d k f fk Letters To The Editor Dear Editor I believe I have a solution to the smoking problem of this school I base this solution on the fact that the majority rules Since the majority of this college and community is I feel that we should look at the problem from the point of view First since the people believe in a Prophet we should find a away away way to make a profit from this smoking problem Agreeing with of the Letters to the Editor of November 22 1972 The entrance of our 39 million Technology Building would not have to be buried with butts if the Administration would consider a respectable convenient smoking area in the building I am not speaking of a dimly lit way the stairwell 11 Smokers are human least they started out that way and they shouldn't be expected to stand in the cold air to smoke It makes make their I cough worse Therefore they are entitled to an area INSIDE the buildings to smoke This isn't to say that the smoker non-smoker should have to share the same game area and air with them 5 Every building has a lounge area the Administration could make two separate areas area's for the two smokers groups-smokers and nonsmokers Providing t each area with chairs magazines coke and candy machines Both groups would be treated equally and therefore no problems Now to get back to the point of view of a profit so this plan can pay for itself i t First we could concentrate and bottle the smoke and air au from the Smokers Room Second we could sell this bottled smoke to the more advanced smokers Now you may say What the hell for forT Well when a smoker in ina a class starts to get too much oxygen in his system and starts having a fit nickey-fit he could whip out his bottled smoke and take a couple of deep breaths to last until he could get out of class and to the Smoking Room This way the smoker is taking care of his This pleasures and not making makings s- s the smoker non suffer If the Administration would consider this plan for the equality of the smokers and smokers non the school would be a leader in the community and the nation Showing that the Administration of a Technical College can think and use some of the knowledge they make the world believe exists t If this suggestion is passed over please tell us were to send our ouri i money for fot the Save the flippers of Laura Beanes Beane's idea Kent B. B Leary Dear Editor Lo The November 1st issue Editorial thrashed the smokers of the ther r college I would like to submit a re butt al from a nonsmoker who knows the right place for her butt It will singe your Baby Blues and at the same time tell it like it is I wonder what visitors to the College think of the inhumane treatment of smokers by forcing them to smoke in the rain snow hail wind and onal sun They probably would welcome the foot 20 trench at least they wouldn't get 1 1st st degree burns trying to douse their cigarettes in a inch 10 urn not to mention the maddening efforts to light a cigarette in a mile 20 per hour wind V l If you expect them to grow up why not have a up grown-up attitude about designated Areas Areas' You know some of the prospective touring o students smoke too Why not bring them out of the stair wells and place urns by the soft drink machines Even hotels and hospitals have urns inside in the lobby I dont don't think the ventilation is any different in these public places Im I'm not for destroying the campus but I think there would be a different attitude about the whole smoking situation if all sides were weighed and the experts on ventilation were consulted along with the fire Marshall and then came to a realistic solution After all if the Surgeon Generals General's warning cannot deter the smoker neither can inconvenient smoking areas M. M Inmates Inmates from Utah State Prison need the technical training they can get at Utah's Technical College and this requires the help and cooperation of the faculty and Social activities have a great deal to do with the pattern the inmate follows once he is released from prison These activities give the inmate a 4 chance to ease back in into to the flow of the free society 1 An inmate who attends Utah Tech for two quarters without any problems shows somewhat that he is ready for release There is added f pressure on an inmate leaving the prison in the morning being free several hours and then returning to prison that afternoon r Of the original group that started the program in September 1971 five t have graduated 2 are still attending school and two were taken off the k program i We need the schooling and will take advantage of the chance to go to school In fact inmate students we need all the help we can get f Utah Tech continues to make news wherever it goes Now its it's the colleges college's one-man one basketball team An Associated Press story on the recent Central Wyoming Basketball Tourney in which the college participated said the team finally cried uncle when six of the seven-man seven team fouled out of the game With only one man on the court Utah Tech was forced to forfeit with about three minutes to go in the game and the score 90 83 in favor of Denver Baptist The score was in Utah Tech's favor with about eight minutes to togo togo togo go and only three men on the floor Utah Tech led at halftime too The colleges college's stormy showing in Wyoming reputedly comes from a anew anew anew new blitz defense conjured up by coach Dave Ballard which in i simple terms means taking out the first man who comes across the center line Jim Frodin the last man left on the floor undoubtedly will have to take 10 laps of the court at the next practice for failing to fit into the new defense Terry Grayson the last man to leave the game scored 28 points He wasn't credited with many assists because there was hardly anyone left to throw the ball to Other year two-year college teams have their own ways of making intermountain news such as luring hiring former pro players as coaches and sneaking girls into the lineups But we do it with our one-man one basketball team |
