Show String fellows asks for aid for uranium miners after his recent visit to the uranium fields in southeastern utah congressman douglas R stringfellow wrote to lewis L strauss chairman of the atomic energy commission and outlined the many difficulties and problems being encountered by the mine operators and others in this area during this past week congressman stringfellow received the following reply irom mr strauss we appreciate your letter of oct 8 1953 calling attention to the fact that many of the uranium gium operators in southern utah have questions and problems regarding the operation of our domestic uranium program which have not been fully answered or resolved we agree with your suggestion that representatives senta tives of our washington office should meet with representative groups of the operators to discuss their problems and questions this will be done as soon as possible mr J esse C johnson director of our division of raw materials who has an extremely full schedule for the next several weeks plans to personally participate in such meetings in the meanwhile we are instructing ting our grand junction office to give immediate and renewed consideration to these problems and vigorously pursue the matter in order to reduce or remove troublesome situations to the extent that this carf be done to the mutual satisfaction of all concerned with reference to the specific problem mentioned in your letter that of improving highway no 24 from hanksville Hanks ville to green river we recently discussed this matter with the bureau of public roads which has a primary statutory responsibility in this field and its regional engineer is endeavoring to work out a solution with the utah state highway commission the bureau appreciates the the importance of access roads for uranium ore production and has given priority to this work with within in the limitation of its ap we appreciate your interest in our uranium production program and shall endeavor to keep you informed of developments of importance to your constituents congressman stringfellow has stated that he will personally keep in contact with the atomic energy commission to see that their promises are full filled and that some help and assistance is made available to this area the congressman also stated that he has met with representatives of the bureau of public roads and the utah state highway corn commission mission and has requested assurances of their cooperation in in improving highway 24 94 from to green river and also other roadways in emery grand wayne and san juan counties which are used in transporting uranium ore |
