Show game gossip DISASTER TO UTAH DUCKS the most serious outbreak of botulism to strike marsh es in 10 years has killed an estimated total of ducks the disease is expected to take a further toll of birds between now and the time freezing weather comes to the affected areas noland nelson in charge of the migratory waterfowl pro gram and volunteer sportsmen alike in the fight to save all the birds possible that are contracting the disease he said many birds have been saved by the use of serum rn as well as removal to freesh water where they are soon rid of the disease if picked up in time the response of afi sportsmen to the help call sounded two weeks ago has helped a great deal in in the program I 1 we are carrying forward to save the ducks thousands have been saved by this volunteer help the outbreak of botulism Is is presently confined chiefly to the several state owned public shooting grounds the federal refuge and most of the private clubs along the eastern shores of the great salt lake mr nelson noted that a majority of the ducks affected are pintails he sights the largest early migration of this species in in many years as the reason for this and the resultant heavy losses it is also noted that although any such losses are serious lou the outlook for the coming g migratory bird season remains brighter than for some years reason for such outlook is the exceptionally heavy hatch of birds on state marshes as well as the optimistic forecast regarding migratory birds from the northern nesting grounds the situation is serious enough that the editors of life magazine have published a short article and a few pictures in theair sept 22 issue DEER HUNTING WITH BOW AND ARROW deer hunting licenses for the bow and arrow of this game was available upon application at the fish and game department offices sept 16 these licenses are special permits costing three dollars any sportsman purchasing such a permit must first have obtained a game or and hunting stamp such purchase of a special bow and arrow permit is ruled the same as any other special deer hunt the bearer is not permitted to apply for any other special deer hunt the bow and arrow season is from oct I 1 through oct 30 three units have been opened for this hunt they are snow county unit in the mueller park basin near ogden the davis section and the Wahn roads basin in utah county the snow basin unit will be opened hunting only for the entire 30 days while the other two units will open to rifle hunting during the regular season oct 2030 20 30 the additional area open to this type of hunting for the season ahead is expected to attract many more bow an and d arrow enthusiasts than were afield in in 1951 during this hunt last vear approximately bow hunters averaged 10 kill success A crossbow may not be used for the taking of deer in utah the blanding sportsmans Sports mans club has been very much concerned about the bluegills blue gills in our fishing reservoir they have written to the utah fish and game commission aski asking ng what should be done and they have I 1 referred it to t the h e F federal e deral fish and wildlife service they have I 1 sent several suggestions and 1 with theair help we hope to control the blue gill which will make better fishing |
